Does this have a purpose or can I sell it? Also what about the Star Sapphire?

Depends on where you've found it. Most of the time it's just an expensive gem item that can be sold. In one case it's a side-quest item within the city of Baldur's Gate:

Star Sapphires can be sold without similar risk:

Rogue stones have incredible uses in BG2. If you are playing some conversion where you can transfer this item with you, it is an important component.

What incredible uses do they provide besides 2 Cespenar recepis and opening the door in the Bridge District?

I didn't know this was possible. I would like to continue with my character in BG1. What would I need to transfer items?

The stone allows you to access an area with very high level enemies. By the time you're powerful enough to beat them, you'll probably have already found a few of these in BG2. I always do on every playthrough. Don't worry about it.
