Berserker Rage question

So I just bought this, and haven't played the original in at least 10 years. I thought I remembered being able to choose when to use innate abilities like berserker rage, but for some reason the ability is not listed on the tab at the bottom of the screen, and my char just randomly executes it during some battles. Is this normal?

Self casting abilities is something they have added with the last patch, much to my anger. You can stop this by switching of the party AI (right corner under the portraits). Keep in mind you will to issue orders from them on for everything by yourself. I have not tested if selfcasting has anything to do with difficulty level, as the difficulty slider is broken.

The ability should be there (the star button for abilities) if it is NOT used already by your character, you start out with one use a day i think. Increases with levels.
