I always start as a fighter.

Fighter.

For the main character, stay away from magic based classes, especially sorcerers, until you have a solid grasp on how to effectively use mages.

Fighter, Paladin is great too and helps rolling a playable character.

From my experience ranged weapons rule in the first game and casters rule in the second game (where they start to get ridiculous spells). Thieves are extremely fun and useful but there are many companions who can fill the role.

Really anything works, just some classes take a bit longer to shine.

For your first playthrough I'd avoid dual-classing unless you're willing to read some form of guide or faq (or know the ruleset well). Multiclassing on the other hand is extremely simple, which makes most of them a good choice - I personally love mage/thief and fighter/mage, but they all work well.

Not a fan of multiclassing in BG1 because you level up slowly.

that was my Cavalier the first time I played the Enhanced Edition and I had a good and not too challenging time playing through BG1+2 with her.

True. It's something to be aware of - depends how much of the content you plan to play and whether or not you'll be taking the character into the next game.

Fighter is the easiest class to start with.

I'd probably say barbarian actually.

The barbarian is just as good as a fighter in combat, but has the added benefit of RAGE, making you immune to mind effecting spells like fear or Rigid Thinking, which are quite powerful against a new player.

Beserker gets the same (well, technically better) immunities so it's more a question of whether you want more HP or better AC

I'd recommend berserker for a first time player because you get free immunities to a lot of instant death effects.

One of the core classes. Thief, cleric, fighters or paladin. Fighters and PLD are mostly physical tanks of fighters and can adsorb a lot of damage and give it out there heavy armor and large weapon variety will help a lot. Thiefs are great for more loot and gold and there back stab damage doubles your hit and only gets better over time. and Clerics are healers not a lot of combat but you can keep party members alive and keep everyone healthy.
Paladin, 100%. The small amount of healing they do can save you tons of frustration.

That said, the game is totally fun and playable with any class. So go with what interests you the most.

No idea why thief is being recommended as they are the most overrepresented class amongst the NPCs. Ranger or Paladin are 'easy mode' for your player character.

Do start with the tutorial by the way. It's quite good. (but you can't keep the character you roll for the tutorial)
