Since i first played it many many years ago it became my favourite of all time. Only recently it got competition from the Witcher 3, but that´s more because i love Sapkowski´s world. Anyway, i play it at least once a year.
Some people like BG1 one more, but i loved the approach to give companions more of a character, more to say and yes, even romances. It´s one of the few games that did that aspect justice.
My opinion of course ;)
Love the Icewind Dale games too, but not for the story really and Torment is a classic.
Never really understood why, BG2 is better in almost every aspect compared to the first one.
Yeah, I can't remember what was or wasn't on the Infinity Engine, but if Planescape: Torment was, it wins.
I could go into long details why I love BG2 so much. But to keep it short, the story itself is what makes BG2 so fantastic. Baldur's Gate 1 as a whole feels like a prologue/tutorial for Baldur's Gate II. Iam always having a hard time choosing who are the 5 characters I want to pick along for my adventure.
This is the reason why I disliked Siege of Dragonspear so much. My expectations were too high to forget that these are not the same writers who created characters like Anomen, Keldorn, Jan Jansen, Valygar Corthala and Yoshimo.
Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment... they're all fantastic in their own ways.
Oh man. Especially the character soundsets. "Male Mage 4".. Still my favorite.
And next would definitely be Baldur's Gate 2. I wasn't in love with the first game because the focus was more on other things besides the story, and I didn't really like having big empty spaces with not much other than combat in them. However, BG2 took a different direction and focused much more on the story and developing the characters, not to mention designing areas with more detail, and I loved it.
I haven't gotten around to Icewind Dale 1-2 yet (I heard they were more focused on combat and I'm not sure if I'll like it, so I've been holding off on playing them for now).
Are there any other Infinity Engine games I've forgotten?
Baldur's Gate (1998)
Planescape: Torment (1999)
Icewind Dale (2000)
Baldur's Gate II (2000)
Icewind Dale II (2002)
These are all the Infinity Engine games, not counting the expansion sets released for almost every game.
I agree with you. I guess sometimes beauty lies in simplicity, not suggesting that BG is simple :) A friend of mine likes the first one more because he never got into the characters but loves the setting and combat. And the characters interact with you more in BG2. I didn´t understood him either. *shrug* I adore every character in BG2 because of that. I will never forget my first playthrough where i hooked up with Aerie or when she got a baby in ToB. I nearly lost it that THIS is actually a thing in a game. (or me fighting Firkraag for several hours because i went in with a low level party and was a dummy)
Well ok, i was rather young too back then ;)
