Any tips on getting the game to work would be welcome.
It's a known bug, there's a thread[forums.beamdog.com] and a ticket[redmine.beamdog.com] for it.
It doesn't seem like they had a chance to reproduce the crash yet. And it has been noted as only a multiplayer problem, which I'm guessing is not the case.
You could add a save file or post some extra information, if you have, to help speed up the process. ( https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/49845/how-to-report-bugs ).
On the crash front: Remove any mods and extra portraits first.
And then check the more common solutions you can find here[www.beamdog.com].
Both the ...Documents\Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition folder and baldur.lua file should be present. Are they? If so, for good measure, rebuild the lua by deleting it (BGEE cannot be running for this).
If you have/had a beamdog version, rename the folder com.beamdog.baldursgateenhancededition temporarily.
Turn off cloud saves.
Not an ideal solution, but until they patch the patch, it's worth a try at least.
