Level one Mage spell Protection from Petrification. Available at High Hedge, west of Beregost and Sorcerous Sundries, entrance district of Baldur's Gate. Also found as random loot.

There's also green Protection From Petrification scrolls, usable by any class. And Potion of Mirrored Eyes.

On the map east of the Temple of Lathander, east of Beregost, you can find a ghoul named Korax. With the right dialogue choices, he will fight for you for a while and he is immune to petrification. Skeletons created by Animate Dead should also be immune.

Could you be a bit more specific?

You can either cast protection from petrification or use a potion of mirror eyes. Edit to add: Using the spell is preferable because the potion can come in useful in another, more difficult fight.

If you miss the correct buffs there are still other options - eg. go with rogue in shadow/invisibility and cast aoe spells (like web+fireball).. bit tricky but good archer can fire few arrows prior endanger of petrification too,
can use fear from spell or wand... You can also charm the basilisk itself and use it for attack his comrades with range support of your party, same as undead creatures some of mage familiars are immune to petrification too..

granted - most budget friendly and easiest is cast Protection from petrification on your fighters, but there is plethora other possibilities too.
