Graphical overhaul?
Just logged back into this game for the first time in a couple of months, and the graphics have been "overhauled", by which I mean everything looks like absolute rubbish.

Is there a way to change the graphics back to how they were when I bought the game? Or failing that, to get a refund for this pile I'm stuck with now?

Short answer, no but there are a few tweaks you can do that some people think makes it slightly better.

Best you can do is turn of the sprite outlines under graphics.

If you happen to have the GoG version, you can roll that one back to v1.3. That should take care of the graphics. (Also a lot of bugs the way I hear.)

You're probably seeing the Sprite Outlines, which can be disabled from the Options > Graphics menu. (You can also turn off the grayscale effect that happens while the game is paused from this menu.)

If turning those options off doesn't do it for you and you just want to revert to 1.3, you can find the option to do so in the Beta tab of the game's Properties menu in the Steam client. Select the 1.3 beta option, and that will roll you back to the v1.3 release of the game.

Cheers everyone, I actually already turned off the sprite outline and displayed the greyscale (seriously, which chuckleheads thought those were good options), but thanks for the tips.

I didn't buy the GoG version so it looks like I'm just screwed. Guess I'm never buying anything from Beamdog again then. Shame, I was actually looking forward to Dragonspear.

Edit - just saw the dev post that the steam option is revertable too, I'll try that.

Let's just say that SoD's quality is ... disputed much to the dismay of BD.

However although by and large I dispise the new graphics, I do happen to like the greyscaling upon pause.

Not much. It's what used to be going on this forum. Then people realized that's probably bad for business. So, rug, lift, sweep.

Are there any screen shot comparisons between the way the game looks now and the way it used to look? I'm playing through BG1 again now, and it's been long enough that I don't really remember it looking significantly different before (other than the UI style and options like sprite outlines).

^Well, I don't think I'll go digging for that. Looking at old BG screenshots, I don't see any significant differences outside of the outlines and the UI.
Turning sprite outline on as a default option is one of those stupit idea. This lol feature should be off by default gosh.

If it ain't broke, fix it anyway. Then tell them you know what they want better than they do. Seems to be the Beamdog motto in writing and in forum moderation, why not also in look/feel/UI/playability?

Try zooming in/looking up zoomed in old pics. The old-style chars are sharper, and look a lot more "pixely".
