Kagain's Quest
Kagain's quest is a pain in the a**, even with NPC and UB installed it does not work as intended. Found out by luck how at least to get it ended (NPC + UB): When you enter the area from the south you find the first caravan close to your right. Go east (right) and then northeast, and you find another caravan with three waggons. Click on the northernmost and suddenly Kagain says that he just found Entar's son dead, and if we would keep him as a member of the party. If you say No he just leaves grumbling. You may need to have Kagain as the active character (and standing close to the west side of the waggon) when you click on that waggon - I actually don't remember it exactly, it was so surprising. Anyway, the quest is marked as solved now.

Just a quick clarafication, if you followed the recommended install order of NPC Pack // Unfinished Biz you should be only seeing the NPC Pack's version of Kagain's Quest. ... If you installed them the other way it's my understanding that things can get a bit messy but what you should have seen was a group of bandits around that second raided caravan and engaged in a short dialog with them before the curbstomping begins. The mod doesn't break but does make more sense if Kagian is in the party when you fight them. Did you perhaps already fight the bandits before running into Kagain?

I've installed NPC first, as suggested.
I fought one of the bandits when going to Beregost. He was standing close to the road and said something about "kick in the head". When going back to the caravans with Kagain I didn't see any bandits. Just later, after I dismissed Kagain, I went back west to the road, then south, and there were the bandits, two of them this time, and the "kick in the head" guy was alive again. No dialogue, though, they just attacked me.

P.S.: Maybe I should add that I've seen both caravans, too, when I first went south. Could that mess things up?

Ok, that doesn't sound quite right. The bandits that appear next to the road are vallina so fighting them is fine, but at the caravan on top of the hill there should be several bandits and a "bandit leader" who hails you when you get too close (Which is almost after you first see them.) and then the fight begins.

Are you using an installation path that is in Window's Program folder? ... If so I'd recomend doing a fresh install outside of that folder as Windows sometimes decides to mess with installing things in there. (My path is simply C:\Games\...)

Something else to consider is that you might want to force WeiDu to autoupdate itself to the latest stable verson which last I checked was 239 (NOT 239.01) which can be easily done by copying a 239 WeiDu.exe into your game folder and renaming it something along the lines of ... setup-WeiDu239 ... then all of your mods will be installed at that level automatically.

Ok, just saw your edit and the bandit leader spawns whether you have met Kagian or not so I suppose that it's possible that you already cleared them out but the bandit leader should still have talked to you first.

No, there were no bandits or bandit leaders at all when I first came across the caravans (nor when I came across them second time with Kagain). I've installed it in the default BGEE Steam directory, which is in Programs (x86). So that may cause the problem? Well, in that case I'd rather consider to just uninstall both NPC and UB. And play with a vanilla EE. Would that even be possible? Or would I need to reinstall EE as well?

It's possible but my personal recomendation would be to do a complete fresh install (and manually clean out folder after you've uninstalled the game just to be completely sure.) and you'll want to start a new character regardless.

Sorry to hear that the mods aren't working for you.

Sigh ...

How is Steam supposed to be able to patch their games, by the way? If that can mess up things when the games are in the default dirctory? So there must be a way to do it?

Why "even"? What do you find a pita if not using any mods? Kagain ends his quest early just by visiting areas around Beregost.

It's my understanding that newer games are better equiped to deal with Window's little quirky interference AND that it doesn't always happen but once I started moving my games outside of the default path I haven't had nearly as many problems and until I got my mod order down I probably did dozens of fresh installs trying different combos.

Go into the EEKeeper and set KAGAINCARAVAN to 1.

I have the vanilla version. It has this same bug. Beam Dog screwed this one up. It used to work. Now, no matter what you do at the large caravan, Kagain doesn't trigger. I fought the large group of bandits with Derek in it. I marched Kagain all over the place around that large caravan. I had entered from the south, of course, thus passing by the smaller caravan and continuing on to the larger one. This quest should be fixed. It worked in the original version of BGI all those years ago.
