Sword and shield was a complete waste of points though....it's situationally useful to a very low dex characters with poor armor...like a druid...but that's really about it. It techncially can give thiefs 1 more ranged ac then using single-weapon style, but the increased crit chance is just too good to pass up.
FOA is the highest damaging weapon in the game once it reach it's +4 form (it also has an even more ridiculous +5 form, but the +5 version prevents you from being hasted (due to a built-in free-action) so you'd need to use GWW to hit the attack per round cap) (and is still a solid choice even at +3), and it's no save slow on hit just wrecks everything. It's multiple ticks of elemental damage can penetrate stoneskin, and it's blunt which is the best damage type overall. The defender of Easthaven gives you 20% reduced incoming physical damage, which combined with Armor of Faith and hardiness can push you to 85% or higher for certain types physical damage reduction, which once you reach about the half-way point, reducing incoming damage becomes FAR more important then trying to stack AC.
Any warrior can use Flails, but only Paladins can wield that Holy Sword (it's a 2H Sword btw, not B-sword).
The key to that fortress is hidden in a lair chocka block crawling with vampires. Then, there's some other parts you also need.
Thus Crom-Faeyr is WORTHLESS to them (not to mention it costs you 15 overall damage worth of STR increasing items to gain 14 overall damage), because the only factor that even got it on the top 10 weapons list is completely negated. The only time Crom is ever a good weapon is if it's used by someone who can't cast DUHM or can't otherwise buff themselves to 25 str...or naturally hit 24-25 (and the winner goes toooo.....Inquisitors...the only class that can use hammers, and can't naturally hit 24+ strength (at 24 str, the damage benefit of going to 25 isn't enough counter act the benefits of using a different top 10 weapon instead) and can't buff themselves to 25).
-----------------
Purifier is the holy sword I was talking about. It's actually supposed to have nearly identical abilities to Carsomyr aside from the bonus vs Chaotic Evil) (which are built-in to all Holy Swords when wielded by paladin) but they only gave it weaker versions of the powers (it gives 30% MR instead of 50% and doesn't dispel on hit, instead casting dispel magic 2 per day).
Though it's ultimately pointless in any case because the both paladin weapons are actually crap and neither even makes it into the top-10 best overall weapons (though the purifier actually edges out Carsomyr overall due to more consistent damage since it's extra damage applies to all evil instead of just chaotic evil and allows you to equip another weapon for additional effects...which is actually a surprisingly rare alignment, the majority of evil enemies are lawful or neutral evil). It's kind of like monks....you see this big list of advantages.....but in practice playing one actually sucks compared to what you could've had easier and with much less effort and trying not to drag the party down when you could've just been using a better weapon and killing the enemies before they were even a threat.
I have to admit that's the first time I've ever heard Crom Faeyr described as worthless, and I absolutely disagree. Buff spells usually have a short lifetime, and they can be dispelled. I'd much rather have a weapon in hand that constantly keeps my strength at 25 than any number of buff spells that only last a few minutes each--unless dispelled.
Uh...no. As long as you have access to Chaotic Commands and someone who can backstab (CHARNAME, Jan, Yoshimo, Valgyar, or Hexxat...even Imoen or Nalia if you're desperate and have a lot of invis items), Mind Flayers are laughably easy. No threat of any kind.
The Bhaalspawn version of the spell actually takes 5x times longer to cast then actual cleric/paladin version of the spell does, which is as fast to cast as Stoneskin, aka, nigh instantainous.
And the fact remains, you can't gear Crom Faeyr till nearly the end of BG2 (which is about the time it becomes possible to hit 24 raw strength, if you don't mind being evil for non-DUHM casters), and sacrifices A LOT of potential damage for literally nothing. You not only sacrifice 2 more overall damage, then spreading the items around, there are plenty of other items that are superior when used in the off-hand slot by a character that can DUHM themselves to 25 str. (I completely ignore the Bhaalspawn version for this part since it's only temporary and as mentioned above is actually inferior to the real version of the spell).
You need to search around more for someone who's supposedly played this game for YEARS. Crom Faeyr has been described as basically worthless pretty much since BG2 came out by a large majority of the people who've played the game a lot and had the initial noob-ism fade from their eyes. The only time people even slightly regarded it as maybe worthwhile was if you were soloing or had absolutely no means of attaining 24+ str from another source.
(Carsomyr and Crom Faeyr are two of the most useless and over-rated weapons in the game that from a min/maxing standpoint hurt your party more to use then they help, aside from 1 or two very highly situational builds..depending on mods, the +6 version of Carsomyr can be useful, but brings nothing worthwhile aside from being +6 (which allows it to pierce Improved Mantle)...and the Ravager +6 and Staff of the Ram +6 are both infinitely better in those cases due to higher damage and better on-hit effects).
The crap about mind flayers being a piece of cake is just that, also. It's a load of brahman manure. Next I'll be hearing from some RPG "expert" how easy it is to take down an elder orb.
Of course...you can also clear BG2 with a modded 161,000 xp cap (aka, never leveling at all) without using any exploits or cheese, easily, so that actually doesn't say very much about the difficulty for the game. BG assumes you aren't going to min/max and expects characters with terrible stats, and unfortunately that's why the content is largely a joke (and on top of this, several classes were given GROSSLY overpowered abilities beyond what they were supposed to get, further trivalizing the game).
Just because you know absolutely nothing about the game doesn't mean the game is hard, it's actually a joke.
Mind Flayers can be exterminated effortlessly Via use of summoned undead (especially Skeleton warriors, which are easy to have that point..1 or two, hasted can massacre entire zones worth of mindflyers), Chaotic Commands (renders the party immune to everything they can throw at the party, even easier to have then skeleton warriors), Using the shield of harmony while equipped with the boomerang dagger +2 and a haste spell (or even jsut boosts of speed works in a pinch) (or Firetooth +3 (easily acquirable before the Mindflayer city), OR the Crimson dart (Watcher's Keep)), Simply gunning them down with ranged weapons under haste, etc. They're actually a joke.
Elder Orbs (and Mother Orbs) can be killed effortlessly via Slayer Form, using the cloak of mirroring and a ranged weapon, Using the ring of spell turning and a ranged weapon, using spell trap from the staff of magi or casting it yourself, using the shield of Cheese with a ranged weapon, using a scroll of protection from magic (lasts long enough to erase the entire beholder section of the underdark, and it's not there's any actual fights in unmodded game that actually needs either of the scrolls, though Kangaxx is a contender for one of them if you refuse to use the Protection from Undead scrolls), distracting them with summons while you mow them down with ranged weapons. The list goes on. Beholders of all varieties are only dangerous the first time you encounter them, and there's usually forewarning to expect beholders so you can prepare just in case.
