Spoiler alert ! i am about to start this quest and have read i can go in one of 2 directions . one is get him the ore he wants and get a total of about 40,000 xp. or give him an alloy and keep the ore and use it to create the Mace of Disruption 2 and only get 10,000 xp. question is the upgrade to the mace worth it?

And yes, personally, I always upgrade the mace. BG2 is full of undead, and strong ones at that.

30k XP is a joke so I would upgrade the mace in case I need the extra negative plane protection.

1º - This is BG2:EE, but people already pointed it.
2º - The upgrade is very good, but a Cleric MC with the priest Stronghold may have some extra options by giving the true Illitium to Sir Sales. If that's worth or not is left up to debate, you can check it personally:

so i am playing baldurs gate 2....shadow of amn....when i open gate 2 my choices are shadow of amn, throne of baal and black pits 2.......so why am i creating havoc in this group?

From an RP point and a better option, I would give sarles the alloy and upgrade the mace to plus 2, Giving it level drain immunity as well as destroy undead. On the RP note, Sarles is a huge, arrogant, high and mighty, Douche canoe. He deserves to be humbled to the lowest degree.

40K xp are not a lot, but also the upgrade isn't so strong, so I usually base decision on roleplaying. otherwise I would choose to upgrade the mace.

The upgrade is worth it, the negative plane protection is handy on a cleric, who you can send into a room full of vampires, turn and watch them explode while not getting level drained :) I personally HATE being level drained so I like as many negative plane protection items I can get. Also, it hits as a +5 weapon so you can use it to kill a particular demi lich if you wanted...
