Playing an Assassin
I rolled a 96 on stats, An Elf Assassin. Curious how t his will go. Do I need to bring another rogue in because of the wimpy 15 points in rogue stuff per level? I presume the whole idea is to raise stealth pretty high on a Assassin for backstabs?

What is the typical way of playing and allocating rogue skillpoints on this one? Any advice on Assassins are welcomed. Right now im just using a longbow, longsword and a buckler on lvl 1. Mixed bag thievery skills, maxed dex.

If you're playing solo, then just forget about Thief skills other than hide and/or move silently and increase them for backstab. If you're playing with a party either just increase lockpicking and detect traps use items/spells for invisibility and backstab, or grab another Thief.

If you are playing with a full party and going through to BG2, I should warn you that by the time you get the higher multiplier most of the enemies will be immune to backstabs.

So it will be useless? ♥♥♥♥.

If you want to be able to successfully use Find Traps and Lock Pick without drinking potion, yes - you will need another Thief.
Or if you are familiar with the game or it does not bother you to bash locks and be hit by traps, then feel free to ignore these skills... Taking Lock Pick and Find Traps with Assassin would be painful - you would not be able to really be assassin:) So yes - your LP and FT will be almost useless (at least without potions).
Well I guess Imoen or Safana is back on the team then...

Guess I should multiclass to make it useful perhaps.

You mean dual?
Dual of course!

Now I managed to role a 94 stat point archer instead.

Whats more fun in you folks opinion?

I like play Thief with Sneak Attack. Archer is strong but not that great in solo - you need someone to tank for you

If you do not mind her alignemnt you can tag along with Shar-Teel and dual her to Thief to be your Lock Pick & Find Traps companion (credit goes to @wendigo211)

Archer's a strong class, and pretty solid all the way through. When you get to ToB there are a few arrow resistant and immune enemies, but you'll still be able to use a bow most of the time. The Archer is a strong enough class that you might find the game too easy.

It's not the highest ranged DPS character. That honor goes to the throwing knife Kensai (however there aren't any magical throwing knives until SoD), but the Archer does have the highest DPS with bows. I recommend you focus on the shortbow, all the good magic bows are shortbows (probably so Thieves and Bards can use them, but they went a little overboard).

If you're soloing you will need someone to kite the enemies for you until you get the Boots of Speed, but the Archer is a decent meleer too.

I will keep all in mind! Archer sounds righ now more appealing than Assassin.

Thanks! I gonna play with a party so I be fine I think :) Short bow archer!

I never was a fan of the assassin. I prefer the Swashbuckler. Level him up to 10, then Dual class to Fighter. Sure his HP will be on the lower end of the stick when comparing him to other Fighters, but the bonus AC will help with that. And I use him in groups as my Trap finder/Lock picker/Dual wield dps.
I gonna try the archer I think then. Maybefor once I can finished the whole BG1-SoD-BG2-ToB. combo-

It is personal preference but if I should write down classes in the order of how I enjoyed playing them (based on solo experience or play in multi-player game), then Archer (I have lost interest before finishing the trilogy with him) would not be as high as Thief (Assassin):
  • The most fun for me (in alphabetical order): Fighter/Mage/Thief, Fighter/Thief, Thief (except Swashbuckler)
  • Mid-tier (in alphabetical order): Bard (Blade), Ranger (Stalker), Sorcerer, Thief (Swashbuckler)
  • Not that great (I am not telling they are bad, just I did not enjoy the game that much; in alphabetical order): Fighter, Ranger (Archer)
I would say go and play the classes/abilities you enjoy to use and forgot the “power factor” (you can adjust difficulty to be able to go even with the weakest class).

True true. The last few playthroughs of BG1 I used was Blackguard and Dragon Disciple. The later was pretty fun but BG2 bugged out and started to spam dialogue all the time. I also kinda like the freedom of BG1 a bit more. But I really want to beat the whole series.

I think I give the archer a try and then just restart the Dragon Disciple cause that bug is so annoying.
