You get two or three warnings
Most non-EE NPCs that have quests come with timers
It's similar with other companions. Once a personal quest ends, activity stops. Safana, for example, won't contribute anything that would be helpful with regard to making a profit. No hints on where to search for stuff, no charisma or seduction based events as to get past guards, no thievery offers.
We decided to go to Nashkell, dig around in a farm field for a bit, grab a beer at the Nashkell inn, then go back north and find Bassilus.
