Ulgoth's Beard quests
Been a long time since I played this the first time, so I need some advice. Do you have to find someone in BG city to tell you to go to UB? Or can you just go there and start doing the quests?

You just go to Ulgoth's Beard and people give you quests from there. Outside of your question as a side note, there is something you can do in BG city to make an interaction different in Ulgoth's Beard, but it's very minor and more of a hindrance

In order to do the Balduran's Final Voyage quest, you must speak with Mendas in a small house to the far West on the Ulgoth's Beard map. You will be approached by an NPC and told that someone wants to meet with you. He will ask you to retrieve the Sea Charts from the Merchant League Counting House in Baldur's Gate.

Return to Baldur's Gate North of the Thieves Guild exit the map due North. The first building on your right is the Merchant League Counting House, not to be confused with the Merchant League building that is part of Scar's quest. Pick the lock and enter. You will be challenged by a guard, answer "My business is my own" any other answer provokes a fight and every kill results in a massive Rep hit. Go upstairs and speak with the Captain, who I think initiates the conversation. Answer him "Do you need anything else for your voyage" whereby he will ask you to go to the Blushing Mermaid to get some DeTrainor's ale for him. It will cost you some gold to obtain. Return and when you give it to him, he will ask you to hold his Sea Charts...take them and get out.

When you are ready to go on the voyage, return to Mendas and give him the charts. You will want to make sure you are stocked up on Magic Arrows/Bolts/Bullets and you may want to have the Bastard Sword Kondar +1/+3 vs. Shape Shifters (even if you don't have anyone proficient) which you either obtained in the Cloakwood or by completing the Seven Suns quest in BG. You may also want to have The Burning Earth, Longsword Flametongue. These are two of the I think four weapons that can hit a specific monster you will encounter.

Be well stocked with Potions, Scrolls and anything else you may need including the lowly Magic Missile spell. Hard Save before you depart as you may decide you aren't ready for this area once you get there. It is totally optional content and there's no "big prize" other than additional XP and some loot.
