Can I have a house?
I just started playing and I know that I can just walk into any house, kill the NPCs and pretend it's my own but before I go giving people their final eviction notice I want to make sure that I won't be able to buy one or get one from a quest or something?

You can't. Such concept was not yet invented in games in general. But it was close, think the ring quest woman near friendly arm inn serves the same purpose, as the woman conveniently leaves after you do her quest.
In BGI, you don't get your own house or stronghold. It's fine to use an abandoned house for your own and use the containers inside for storage.

Thanks. I am off to find a comfy place to settle down in.

Why would you want to settle down in a house? The setting of the game dictates that you are an adventurer. An adventurer is a traveler therefore does not need a house.

It actually dictates only that Gorion is your foster father, Imoen is your friend, and you spent your life in Candlekeep.

Yeah and your foster father is murdered and the place you call home is no longer safe to stay. There are 2 assassins who tries to murder you within candlekeep. So you pretty much got nowhere to stay except on the road or the occasional inn.

Well, if you were a druid you could go to Friendly Arm Inn, talk with Jaheira about things, hear of the nearby druid coven, join them druids, and then say GL getting me from here gimp assassins :D

The kobolds so far have been a bigger challenge than any of the assassins who were hired to kill me. I'm not especially worried. Definitely not enough to dissuade me from setting down by a lake, in a nice comfy house with a fireplace and marrying Imoen. Mwahaha just try to stop me.

Haha, I will have to finish SoD for the first time so that I can start BG2 for the 11th time or so, and this time finally play it to the end.

There was a good tip in this forum some time ago to RP through it.

I made Kagain's shop my home

I've always considered Imoen my sister. Neera is a wild girl and can be fun.

I don't have a home, but I use barrels and chests in each town for stashing junk. So, far it's always been there, untouched, when I check.

In Diablo 2, stuff on the ground will 'poof' after some time. Does that also happen in BG1 and the other sequels? Is the stuff in the barrels and chests safe?

Containers are safe as far as I know. Stuff on the floor disappears. https://youtu.be/3ULNX2k0YbI

Granted I haven't played that much of the game but I thought Imoen had a thing for the protagonist from the beginning. Although when I think about it some more I might've seen the sibling comparison having been drawn in the journal. If anything though I'll just collect all the female companions, kick them from my party inside of my comfy lake house master bedroom and do like a harem. Maybe the abandoned place in High Hedge.
