Proper order to play BG/IWD?
Hey there,

I'd like to get back into these games. I have BG/BG2/IWD all EE editions.

What is the proper order to play them in to keep things... linear?

Do tell!

Thanks :)

Chronologically (within the game world), it's IWD then BG, SoD and BG2. IWD is set about 100 years before the events of BG.

Thanks for the fast response!

So would you suggest I play IWD first and go from there?

It's been a real long time since I played Icewind Dale or Baldur's Gate 2, but other than a possible reference (and I mean, it's super small) to IWD towards the end of Siege of Dragonspear, I don't think there's actually any connection between the series beyond being in the same fantasy world.
So I think you're good with whatever, but Icewind Dale does technically take place before Baldur's Gate.

And if you really want to get particular about it, don't forget that The Black Pits take place before the events of Baldur's Gate as well. Black Pits 2 I don't know about, I've never played them.

Hmm interesting, I was looking for an excuse to skip straight to the black pits.

Black Pits is pretty stand alone. It's referenced a very little bit in BG1, and there's a related companion, but otherwise The Black Pits is its own thing.

So what exactly is black pits?

^It's a new campaign, of sorts, that's in Baldur's Gate: Enhance Edition. There's a light story where you and your custom party have been captured and forced to fight ever more difficult rounds in an arena at the pleasure of a drow ***hole.
It's not bad, you'll get plenty of good gear, the XP cap is much higher than in the main campaign, and for what is essentially a waved based survival mode, there's actually a fair amount of story and writing.

BG2:EE has the sequel, Black Pits 2.

Keep in mind that besides having basically no connection to the BG games, the IWD games are all about dungeon crawling and have very little plot to speak of, so it really doesn't matter which of the two series you play first.

Hey there!

Ahh, when in BG:EE Can I start the Black Pits?

^It's a whole separate campaign. When you start the game, you'll have the option to pick Baldur's Gate's main campaign or The Black Pits (or Siege of Dragonspear, if you have it), and you'll be taken to a different main menu for each one. So The Black Pits basically functions as a separate game.

Ahh so you can't use your same characters for Black Pits?

You might be able to import them, I've never tried. But I think the idea is that you make a single character for Baldur's Gate and then a whole party for Black Pits.

How do you export or import charactes? I didn't see it in the menu.

Is Black Pits really that fun, considering you have to make entirely new characters?

^When you go to create a new character, one of your options will be import. When you're in game, you'll have an export button on your character records screen for any character you've made.
