Defeating Fission slime in Duralgs dungeon without a mage

How does one defeat the Fission slime without a mage. Is there a way outside of Bualdur's Gate to obtain the necessry eq?

Fire and acid arrows seem to be a simple choice.

Does acid really work? from what I hear only fire.
