Any tips for him?

I made one with max str, con, int and dex, specced into 2 weapons and bastard swords but even ♥♥♥♥ like bears oneshots me and my pitiful 11hp.

I'm using armor and mirror image.

Also why does this guy have 17 hp?

checks, a fighter with 18 CON should start with 12 HP. additional HP would come from find familiar maybe? yeah looks like he summoned a famliar for 6 HP and put it in his pack.

so that would be 12+6? or 18 HP? maybe he gets one less. yeah you get 11 HP as a fighter/illusionist because dunno.

what I would do... well 1 wear a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ helmet. mages can't wear armor without losing their spells, maybe you want to do that cuz your spell list sucks right now. some level 1 disable spells?

but yeah you want to do some spells like stinking cloud/web disable a group and pelt them from range so ...bastard swords is a bad choice. probably long bows? your heavy armor fighters might be able to mainline.

you can mainline if you wore armor I guess with your 17 HP.

but see a fighter starts with 12 HP and gets 12 HP every level (max on level up) until 9. so a level 3 fighter can tank alot better than a level 1 fighter.

but bears are bears man. they eat people, especially level 1 unarmored people. use a bow.

I agree with what red255 said and would add...your only goal after exiting Candlekeep is to make it to the Friendly Arm Inn alive, pick up Xzar and Monatron on the road, stick to the path and hustle your way there. You can come back to these areas when your party is bigger and you are better armed.

Also, a Melee enemy cannot do damage to your characters if you shoot them down from a distance. At least the first couple of levels you will want to use Bows, Slings and thrown weapons to damage or kill your opponents so they don't eat your face off. As you get better Armor Classes and more Hit Points, you can engage in Melee more often. I don't, but there's no reason why you can't play differently and win.

would also add that to prevent enemies closing you distract them with a runner while your other guys pelt them with ranged weapons.

but actually no. as an experienced player I ran down to high hedge, got the chicken got 2000 XP for turning that in solo, killed some skeletons, got perdue's short sword, bought a potion of mirror eyes, went to beregost, turned in the sword. went to mutamin's garden, got the zombie, let him deal with the basilisks while I helped after their attention was on him. saving frequently but the zombie die manage to handle it. drank the potion for the last 3 basisks.

the mercs in the center I went back to high hedge, sold all the loot which included a laneral necklack for 3000 bought 3 potions of fiery burning, chucked them at the mercenaries, got their stuff. was at 34500 XP. recruited a party continued my adventure.

Now I'm not telling you to do what I did. just saying its what I do now when I start a Baldur's gate campaign.
