Chessboard Fight "Puzzle"
So, late in the game there's an optional fight where you and your party are placed on a chessboard as King, Queen, 2 Knights and 2 Rooks. You're given limitations on movement and if you do not adhere to those limitations you get lightning bolted. If an enemy gets to your back line the "Pawns" become "Queens" and cast fear on you, causing you to move all over the board and get struck by lightning until you die.

The only way I've been able to win this fight is with a wand of fire, just pelting the enemy king from out of fog of war range with a half dozen fireballs until he dies... how's it supposed to be done?

Most people do that actually, spam fireballs. However I think the chess piece location is based on party location. The only other option is buffing a tank and using it as a decoy to range attack the enemies. When I mean buff, I mean being immune to magical effects and etc.

I think the fight should have been more along the lines of the mini create your own adventure puzzle in the 4th level of watchers keep.
One or two Cloudkill into the edge of fog of war is a very popular and cheesy way to end that fight quickly. Else, it depends on your party setup. One can protect against many forms of attacks. And with some parties, having to raise one or two dead companions shouldn't be a real problem either.

I turned off party AI and shot a ranged weapon and took out the enemies 3 at a time. never leaving my side of the board.

As when some deranged madman ala SAW starts playing games with you the proper response is not to play.

I still dont get how that part is supposed to work exactly, I turn the party AI off and just blast a fire ball.

So without playing with any wizards as I do , of course I turned AI off first. I then just had one move up slightly each time and took out the pawns with ranged and when they reached the 2 square in with melee. Not sure if I just got lucky or what but King just happen to come down with them (only pawns fought) and got slaughtered then win. Hopefully that helps for anyone without access to wizards. It may have just been luck but it worked.

That's one weird piece of BG.

This chess board, I actually never had patience to work out does it go like chess and what else applies. Burned and blasted them all and moved through.
