I tried to exploit it by moving some items from the extra party members to my character. When I left the area all the items I gave myself were gone.
Well, I am currently playing with a Half-orc Barbarian with charisma 18, and I left candlekeep with more than 2000 gold :)
Now, I believe that only thieves and barbarians can do it, but it is a lot more than 200 gold.
Well...to "exploit" it you have to move the items onto your character and then export them. Then start a new game and import that character. You will have the items yet. Though there isn't anything really outstanding to be had in there. So I view it more as a waste of time.
The quotes are around exploit since keeping items and experience was intended from the export/import process by the devs...so it isn't really an exploit. Just feels like one.
Eh, true. I personally have no desire to exploit the "export" function. I simply go into Baldur's Gate and premake characters and import them into whatever playthrough I want to do.
I was hoping to get the wand so I could sell it at the Inn without exporting.
You must have been strong enough to bash open the chest in the middle room upstairs that has that expensive gem.
