so minsc is going to want to pair up with his mage lady. so hes actually part of a set with Dynaheir.
So lets walk thru this.
Imoen is a Thief that can dual to mage. She can't be taken into Siege of Dragonspear. Safana can. if you just want a straight class thief.
Jaheira/Khalid. if you want to break up the set, simply kick them when the other is dead or disabled then raise the other one. FLESH TO STONE
Jahiera is nearly as good as a fighter/cleric kit which is really good. Khalid is a more or less straight fighter Not incredibly great but solid, both go into siege of dragonspear.
Both have rather crap strength scores I normally give one of them the belt of strength 19 that you get from Rasaad's companion quest. if you got the max HP on level ups active Jahiera gets alot of HP by the end of siege of dragonspear.
Branwen, not really impressed by her, she's just a cleric, why not use Yeslick if you wanted a second cleric/tank?
Ajantis. I mean you can get him early. he works, can use some bastard swords making him OK to take to kill some werewolves. but he doesn't go to siege of dragonspear.
Minsc Pairs with Dynahier who is a specialist mage. not the biggest fan of the big idiot, but he serves a purpose.
Neera is a wild mage. if you slot the reckless dweemer spell you can attempt to cast any spell thru a wild magic surge, they also get the same amount of spells per day as a specialist mage without losing a spell school and instead getting the wild magic surge chance and adding or subtracting a number of spell levels on each casting.
So lets work from the back and go in.
Main is fighter/Mage (counts as mage or tank or both. honestly I use wands of fireball on my mages so they really just need level 1)
Jahiera/Khalid. Counts as 1 healer, and 2 tanks. Khalid could count as Ranged.
Branwhen is a cleric. counts as 1 healer.
Ajantis has a very minor healing ability, so mainly a Tank with a small amount of healing.
Minsc is a tank with perhaps an archery side.
Neera is a mage.
Since you want 1 mage and you are a mage, lets throw out Neera and Minsc.
Leaving:
Iomen
Jaheira / Khalid
Branwen
Ajantis
Skill doesn't really matter - it's far preferable to disable the enemy (web) and inexpertly shoot at them than to send your expert swordsmen into melee where they will alert every enemy on the map and end up badly injured.
For the same reason, you probably shouldn't have more than two melee specialists (what you call "tanks") - you only have two items giving you free action, so everyone else will have to hang back and play archer regardless.
Ajantis
Neera
Branwen
Imoen
Kivan
This group allows your F/M, Ajantis and Branwen to melee it up while Kivan and Imoen shoots arrows from the back. Neera supports with spells.
Shortly after you finish Kivan's story arch, you will meet Coran. I would suggest dropping Kivan (for roleplay reasons, I say that now that Kivan has completed his quest he needs to go "find himself") and pick up Coran. This gives you a second thief and a better archer.
Now you have the option of Dual Classing Imoen into a Mage!
Personally I'd swap out Ajantis for Dorn. I find him to be stronger, and he has a personal quest that has some decent rewards. Ajantis as a non kit paladin is just kind of boring.
1. Main Character (Fighter/Mage which can both tank and be ranged with spells and weapons)
2. Ajantis (tank with a bit of healing using Lay on Hands)
3. & 4. Minsc & Dynaheir pair (a tank and a mage)
5. Imoen (thief and ranged with high dexterity, can dual class into mage for more mage ability in the party)
6. Yeslick (can do tanking, can heal with cleric spells, can use slings for ranged attacks)
You have 4 characters capable of battling on the front lines, 2 characters casting mage spells (3 if Imoen is dual classed), 1 cleric and 1 paladin for healing, 3 characters who can be effective ranged attackers (Main Character, Imoen, Yeslick). You also cover basic needs as far as thief skills.
Dropping Jaheira & Khalid is okay cus Fighter/Cleric is IMO more interesting than Fighter/Druid, and Khalid has really poor morale in combat making him not much of a Fighter. Branwen as a single class Cleric somewhat loses out to Yeslick and Yeslick has a more interesting personality to me.
Neera can be decently good but unless you want to go through her questline going with Dynaheir may be better as she pairs up with Minsc and is a pretty nice Mage who doesn't deal with wild surges like Neera would. You'd have to do a trick to get Dynaheir out of your party while keeping Minsc too.
It will be interesting to do a evil run after that though for now I settled with:
Khalid
Ajantis
Me (Fighter/Mage)
Jaheira
Imoen
Branwen
Unfortunately I had to kill Minsc cause he turned impatient!
Get this, he turned hostile right at the bridge in the gnolls stronghold. I didnt want to load an old savegame, so dead he is now ;)
Only thing that kinda bugs me is Jaheira's build. Id like her to be a sorcerer!
Mabye I'll change that when I get to BG2!
There isn't any such thing as the perfect group. Pick some that have fun and fill important slots. Play through it a second time and go with a different build, then a 3rd then 4th. Then download some modules and play with some custom NPC's.
It is called a figure of speech my friend! Dont you worry I'll find my perfect group and have fun!
Fighter/mage
Imoen
Branwen
Ajantis
Minsc
(Jaheira)...
...it seems good!
