Who can even play this game vanilla without being bored by lack of challenge?
Hmm? What mods are you talking about because there shouldn't be much if any conflicts between 1.5 and 2.0
Because 1.3 is the superior version of the EEs?
There is no real reason. At least none that I could find so far. The newer patches work fine. Some people just like to live in the past where "everything was better". And they are very vocal about it.
Though I do agree that forced upgrades are bad for consumers in general, but that's a problem with steam in general, and one reason why I've been buying more games on gog recently.
I think that stuff has become easier to use over the years for people without a deeper technical understanding. And Steam played a major part in that. You just hit the install button and 'magically' things work out. At least for newer games I didn't run into trouble so far. Had some problems with some old games, but that's just running old software on modern hardware, not neccesarily a steam problem. Had I installed from a cd-version, I would most likely run into the same problems.
But all this easy-to-use stuff comes at a price. Decisions are made for us by the systems we use. And we are lucky if they even tell us about it. That's why I use win10 only for casual gaming and not for more serious things. Also I will probably buy more games on different sites that give me an binary that I can install when and where I want.
