Are the portraits automatically installed in the game? I only see like 5 new portraits...

Its only 5 or 6 portraits. I bought it to support Beamdog.

Apparently you can't use those pictures if you play v1.3.

Yeah, the portrait selection still isn't particularly vast. Fortunately it's perfectly possible to add custom portraits to the game.
