Tome of Leadership and Influence

Hello, I have a question I cant seem to find an answer to.

I have just found the tome of leadership and influence. I have 18 charisma on a half elf fighter/mage. when i use the tome which is supposed to increase my charisma by 1 point. the charisma stat turns red. but it stays at a value of 18.

I get that a red stat means it is affected by a magical modifier but shouldn't it show 19?

Not necessarily - the character screen shows the current stats after whatever temporary effects have been applied (e.g. after you had your strength drained by a BG2 shadow).

I'd double check if you have any gear equipped that lowers charisma or sets charisma to 18.

I'm not. i have base 18 Charisma, I rolled my character with 18. but regardless I did as you suggested and removed all my items and checked again. it still stays at a white 18. then when I use the tome it goes red. but stays 18.

RED means negatively affected. Did you, as fauxpas suggested, use a dispel magic potion/scroll AFTER removing all items?

Edit: What race and class, btw.?
