Once you start up BG2, just start a new game, and at the character select screen just import from your last BG1 save file.
Installing EET is not that hard (if you *just* install that and nothing else) but you first need to install a mod called ModMerge[1] in your BG1 installation that has SoD installed, and the you simply have to run its setup-EET on your BG2 install, and it'll ask you for the path to your BG1 install.
When that step finishes, you'll have a new mod installer called setup-EET_end that'd need to be installed after all other mods... so if you don't want to install more mods, just run that and you'd be done. If you intend to add mods to your installation, do that before running the EET_end. (You can install tweaks and cosmetics, UI etc. after EET safely... and SCS will need to be installed after EET_end.)
Last, an optional step would to install the BP-BG Worldmap mod[3], but is not needed at all since EET already comes with a big worldmap of it's own.)
You can find more info at the EET forums over the G3 site[2], if you're interested. Pay attention to the readme and the compatibility list for mods that can be installed over EET, if you intend to add other mods.
(*) You really need SoD, as it's a requisite for installing EET

I just want to say, as someone who loved the originals, EET mod is well worth the trouble.
This playthrough is shaping up to be my absolute favorite and is all thanks to the EET.
