Length?
I remember seeing that baldur's gate is 40+ hours/8 chapters long but I'm already in the third chapter at maybe4-5 hours iirc? Am I rushing this game or does it get slower as things open up?

The first couple chapters go by quick, especially if you just follow the prompts, pick up Khalid and Jaheira, then immediately go to Nashkel like they want to... which isn't an uncommon thing to do. It slows down a bit after that, where it's not quite as obvious where you're supposed to go, and it takes some time to get to the Bandit camp if you hadn't already explored that way. Once Cloakwood is finished and you make it to Baldur's Gate, it slows down even more, as there is plenty of exploration and quests to be done there. A lot of the expansion content is done at this point as well.

The game is much longer if you explore each part of the map. When getting to Beregost on your way south, explore the whole town. Try to explore the entire game world map. That's a 100+ hour game if you do everything, even before the new DLC Siege of Dragonspear.

The XP cap in the original game was around 90.000, that is without TotSC and SoD addons. And you could reach that cap in the original game a fair bit before the final encounter if you explored extensively. This means you can use your current XP as a measure of how far you are in the game, kind of. It's not a perfect measure since some areas give way more XP than others.

If you play this for the first time, then I would say take your time to explore all the areas. You can do the main quests first or later, it doesn't really matter that much. If you encounter something that's too hard to beat, retreat and come back later with more levels and better equipment.

But you don't have to worry about there not being enough content. Absolutely not.
