Troubles with Traps
As the title says, I'm having trouble disarming some of the traps I've come across. Specifically, some of the ones in Durlag's Tower (there was also an incident in the weird ice dungeon with all of the crazy mages, but I eventually decided to take the fireball and be done with it).

I am currently working under the assumption that the "Open Locks" skill is also the one for disarming traps, and my theif currently has 145 in it (Alora with 20 Dex, her lucky Rabbit's Foot, and under the effects of a Potion of Master Theivery, if any of that factors in on top of the 145), and yet while most traps are one-and-done, a small number simply refuse to be disarmed. Heck, she kept blowing herself up on the afore-mentioned Fireball trap, which is why I got so fed up with the thing.

The most frusterating part of it all, is when a container is both trapped and locked. Until you disarm the trap, you cannot try at the lock, and as long as it's locked, you can't even decide to trigger the trap just to get at the loot. I don't care if it kills me, I can fix that later! Just give me the damned treasure!

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Should I just come back later?

The Find Traps skill is used for disarming traps. At 100 skill you should be able to spot and disarm any trap in BG1. You also don't need more than 100 in Open Locks.

Ah, thank you. I suppose my problem was that I am used to the more recent advent of working with locks and traped being lumped under Disable Device, and finding the traps being a seperate Perception skill check.
There are non-disarmable traps in the game. The dire charm trap on the altar in Durlag's Tower (AR0504) cannot be disarmed with skill 120. It could be that it's flagged as non-disarmable.

I have Imoen as Thief, she has 105% on Detect Traps. Using Potion of Perception her ability is 125% but she still can NOT detect traps on Durlag Tower Lower Level 2 in Torture Room and in a passway from Switch room to Bridge room.
I'm playing on Core Rules difficulty.

Any recommendations?

It is actualy enough to get 99, as the skill check is "skill + 1d10". This also means that 90 open locks is enough to open any lock, you just have to roll a few times.

Potions of Mind Focusing raise DEX and INT +3 and stack up to 25 which also raises Find/Remove Traps, Open Locks and Lore (if you need to identify items without casting identify)

Does she wear light armor only? Do you scout ahead carefully and slowly as to wait up to one round for her to detect traps?

Heavy armor if she managed to get it on, wouldn't prevent her from detecting traps, just disarming them.

but yeah there are rolls that are made periodically you need to camp around in find traps mode. (set the AI to thief adventurer, she should search for traps at the exclusion of all else)

One thing that I do to speed gameplay is to get Imoen's Find/Remove Traps to 100, have her drink a Potion of Perception to make it 120 then make her invisible. Have her thoroughly explore the level detecting and removing traps (which doesn't break invisibility) while being careful make sure she never opens a door, chest or in any other way break invisibility. The rest of the party forms a battle line for her to retreat to if something goes wrong. I put the Boots of Speed in her inventory (not equipt) for that purpose. I move the battle line forward on larger levels, but bewaren that some of the oppostiion wanders so they may make contact.
