You did not say which of 10 factions you are using so we have no real recomendations except in broad strokes ..best damage and defence with highest init'.
In Design watch yer costs, your working with a single unit. The real cost will be multiplied by the number of heads in the unit stack.
6 crystals may not seem like alot ..x7 in a full stack = 42.
I usualy have one army dedicated as Mobile Store with an almost useless Hero mounted and then what ever rag tag left over units as some kind of defence. As long as they can keep up, mounted is best. This then holds all the extra stuff and can "deliver". If he can also make roads he becomes useful in the down time.
I usually adapt my designs to the materials I have available ...
therefore, if I have a scarcity in crystals, I don´t use any magic items on them, if I have only few metals but lots of crystals, I use mages and if I have a scarcity on horses, but lots of Wargs, I use warg riders ... and so on
Archer
Mage
Spear
Mounted Archer
Mounted Mage
Mounted Spear
Warg Archer
Warg Mage
Warg Spear
Oh, "Mage" means one ice, fire, and lightning - for weak and strong rod varients.
For each version, I make a "naked", a "leathered", a "always-upgraded". I also have versions with specified magic items sets (that is, speed/initiative, and rings/amulets).
TIP: "Mage" units attack with ranged elemental staves. Their damage seems based on accuracy, so load them up on that. You can have an Ice-Staff user wear a fire, and ice ring (for +6 more damage, 3 fire and 3 ice) to help with damage.
As for deciding a unit grouping, I pick 1 archer, 2 mage, rest tanks.
Yes, it gets annoying to sift through this crap every time, and I hate it.
Pefix your unit names.
In FE I have 26 factions, last I looked. "Mage" doesn't cut it for a name.(52+ variations, minimum)
I use the first two letters from the Faction. Like so;
al-Archer xxx ;Altar
al-Dog Soldier xxzz
al-Mage xxxxx
pa-Mage xxxzz ;Pariden
gi-Mage zzxx ;Gilden
(the "xxxx" is extra desciption you put like Mounted or Ice)
..now they get grouped in the file system.
I also go into the file and take the prefix OFF the "DisplayName" tag.
Then they show up as Archer and Mage in the faction list.
<<never touch the InternalName tag>>
..just try and get into the habit of the prefix.
((If you want to rename all your current units.. I have a trick for that too. I fgured it out about the 10th-12th faction))
xyy[y][M][C]_z
With
x = movement: F = Foot, H = Horse, W = Warg
yy[y] = Weapon (for example Swd = Sword)
M = (if present) Metal Needed
C = (if present) Crystal needed
z = Number that describes relative tech level of the unit
As you can see from my previous, faction prefix and the Fluffy bits on sufix.
Faction prefix is the biggy with me, 26+ differant factions.
