(*) Theoretically, those might be dragons, but unless the map is absolutely ridiculous with dragon recruitment points and you're dragging out your victory, you probably aren't running around with more than one or two dragons in your entire military...
1. Guards unarmored/spear/balance/potential/iron skin
2. As soon as I have a Fortress with training discount I add full armor (starting with leather) adn call them legion.
3.Since I got lucky and found lots of wargs and iron. I mounted my units and added a Axe using variant. Usually I start out by rushing into a group of enmys and cleave them. Then my hero can use rescue. to switch places and tank them (sword => counter attacks).
game is still running so I have no idea how this will work out in the endgame.
also i changed thier sex to female and call them Catness... ;-0
To augment the lancers, I give the appropriate rings and necklaces to mages, and mount them on horseback as well, so I have an invincible army that gets 4 moves per turn.
I find mages far more useful that archers, because they have higher initiative, and because enemies typically lack magic defence, even if they have heavy armour. Plate armour seems to do little against fireballs and freeze blasts.
