Early game tips?

Just need something simple like knowing what/when to build to have a solid early game, when to start producing settlers, what to research, etc..

Most guides are either focused on exploiting builds, like beast masters trying to get that bear-like monster, or basic mechanics =/


Any tips for a solid early game? Played the first FE but it was quite some time ago and I don't remember that much of it, except for juggernaults being overpowered and taking down epic difficulty monsters with their infinite attacks and buffs.

Oh also, is manual improvement placement broken? I remember it working fine in FE but in this game it always has something selected, if I click anything, anywhere, with a town selected it will start spamming buildings.

Manual placement works fine, you just need to turn it on. I believe it is in the "advanced" settings.

What I do is make 2 scouts and set them to explore and start reaseaching like crazy, my cities go:
city 1 fotress
city 2 research
city 3 4 and 5 (if you go that far) money making or whatever.

I have only played around 8 hours but his keeps me alive, my first 3 cities are ususally close then the other trade ones are usually close to friendly empires :)
