For example certain factions can train henchmen. They have somewhat limited development tree, but can wear stuff and raise in levels.

There is a "faction surrender" option in game setup (can't remember exactly what it is called). If it is enabled, when an enemy faction is down to their last city, you can demand that they surrender, and you gain their faction leader as a hero, along with any equipment they were carrying.

Sions (trainable henchmen available to Empire factions) kind of work like heros, but they can only carry the equipment you give them in the unit design window.

That was the original game in this series... Elemental: War of Magic

Then there was Fallen Enchantress, then this game.

They are consindering a DLC/expansion for this game to add dynasties back in, I'm not sure if that is official yet though.

Henchmen are trainable champions. All empires can train Sions, which level like champions and can be trained to start with awesome equipment, but can't cast spells or equip hero items, and die permanently.

Since Heroes share XP when in the same army, your best bet is to have 2-3 champions and level them intensely as leaders of their own army...

how is it i get sions and henchmen? so far in my game i've been having 1 leader per army, but i'll try your suggestion

To be able to train Sions, you have to first research the "Sion Temple" in the magic tree. Also, I am pretty sure you can only recruit them in your lvl 4-5 cities. YOu really want to recruit them in a Fortress/Strike Garrisson once you have also built a Warrior Temple and Command Post, since then you get 3 free levels + 1 extra you can add as a customized skill.

Henchmen are available only to Altar. Unless you're willing to use mods, in which case I
've made a mod that makes them available to any custom faction. All empires gets sions with the 'Sion Temple' Tech. Any city can train a sion but fortresses with big bonuses for trained units are best.
