Sions (trainable henchmen available to Empire factions) kind of work like heros, but they can only carry the equipment you give them in the unit design window.
That was the original game in this series... Elemental: War of Magic
Then there was Fallen Enchantress, then this game.
They are consindering a DLC/expansion for this game to add dynasties back in, I'm not sure if that is official yet though.
Since Heroes share XP when in the same army, your best bet is to have 2-3 champions and level them intensely as leaders of their own army...
've made a mod that makes them available to any custom faction. All empires gets sions with the 'Sion Temple' Tech. Any city can train a sion but fortresses with big bonuses for trained units are best.
