Here is a direct link to that thread. He (mod author) doesn't post there often anymore, but did just post in the last day or so...

Yep. Thought you wanted to know what Grey Magic was. Guess my point was it would probably be best to post that question in the thread on Stardock forum as I don't think Primal looks or posts here very often. And certainly he could help with that question. I believe he told me one time that the lore of that mod was based on the Lords of Magic game. But I'm not sure if that Grey Magic is actually part of the xtra mod or perhaps one of the other compatible mods most people install along with xtra.
There are certainly some little idiosyncrasies of playing with the mod. For instance there is a scroll in your inventory at the beginning which IIRC he included to help the AI leaders but that you can use also. It lets the leader choose the class of that character right away. I think he did this to encourage the AI down the right path of playing that particular leader effectively. Depending on which you pick there are also special spells for summoning the special shards in the xtra mod.
I would say to just start playing and see what happens, just be prepared to not want to finish the first game or two as you learn/realize things.
edit: I'll also add, I love the work Primal did in expanding some of the UI windows. Tiny bit of work to get them installed correctly, but well worth it in the long run with the extra info exposed, and nice laid out.
