Some are crap but there are at least 200 really good ones. 600+ maps in total (approx 4GB in size).
EDIT: And oh, I forgot! If you haven't tried the BK-mod maps already make sure you do:
http://www.moddb.com/mods/blitzkrieg/downloads/blitzkrieg-v40-map-installer
NOTE: I haven't tried this installer with New Steam version but I copied the maps from my old ww2 folder on C: to the relaunched version ww2-folder.
I browsed through the 4 player maps offered at that link, and they are 100% crap; most don't bother with mini-map images, and a fair amount are children's maps with little detail or tactical merit… yet are invariable inundated with un-manned Flak 88's and scores of weapons just lying around (I have always suspected these types are merely a way for the map-maker to cheat by giving them an advantage derived from the intimate knowledge of immediately available weapons).
Others are merely slapped together using nothing but the height editor and buildings (no textures or decals whatsoever). These might be the bestest maps ever, but I find it impossible to care about an utter lack of creativity... especially when there is plenty of material out there by those that know how to use WorldBuilder.
The ones that boasted websites or “cool” nicknames on the mini-map were also discounted out of hand (I've never met a braggart that actually produced what they hype).
Finally, there were an assortment of maps copied from the official selection... and there really is no need to have two of the same map cluttering up your list, especially if one has had alterations yet keeps the same name.
Apart from those, the one map I did find with that at least hinted at some level of competency turned out to be bugged (your command territory vanished after placing a single structure, which prevents you from building anything else).

The BK Mod map pack is nice, though. Most of those have at least some level of play value.
