How to avoid re-downloading the "new" version
I already had CoH installed but now there is this "New Steam Version" that I have to use to play online apparently.

What is the name of the folder for the new version?

Can I just copy over the files from the old version to the new folder and have Steam work it's magic to figure out which files are different/missing?

Thanks

nevermind I found out the folder is called "company of heroes relaunch" and you cannot copy/paste the files from the old one to the new one. It doesn't recognize them at all and I have to redownload the entire damn thing.

EXTREMELY STUPID

it wouldnt work becuase you have to login to your relic account on the old COH before you can play and Relic is shut down. That was the whole reason for the move to steam

Although the experience is basically the same for the user (except for the Relic servers) there would simply be too many differences under-the-hood for what you were hoping to do. It's not stupid, it is just the way it is. At least the game still has servers (on Steam). A lot of other RTS games of the same vintage are defunct as far as multiplayer is concerned, which is a real shame.

I remember loading up the old relic game after a long time away and being appalled that it longer worked. I was greatly relieved when I found out about the new Steam version.

I just added this game to my Steam account after having purchased it back in 2009 from IGN(now Direct2Drive) and they gave me a Steam key. So, it's downloading Opposing Fronts now but Steam also queued up "Company of Heroes - Steam Version 7.5GB" and "Company of Heroes 7.5GB". Is it seriously going to download the same game twice? Should I stop the 3rd download that isn't described as the new "Steam Version"?

Thank you. I did remove the "Company of Heroes" vanilla version before Steam could waste 7.5GB of my bandwidth. But I see on the hard disk that when Steam queues up games for download it allocates all that space from the beginning on the hard disk. So, I got 7.5GB of phantom data in the temp folder I gotta go back and delete. Easy enough. Why do they even do this? It just confuses people. The only thing I can gather is that maybe the New Steam Version lets you do multiplayer on SteamWorks while the vanilla version lets you do single-player. But if there is in fact no benefit whatsoever to downloading the vanilla version then they should fix this. It is really confusing.

Following the bankruptancy of THQ the old servers were shut down as they were now being run by Ubisoft. SEGA bought the CoH franchise and opened up Steamworks servers. The only way to access the Steamworks servers is to play the New Steam Version. The only way to get the New Steam Version is to have any CoH title on your Steam account. It can be difficult to play even singleplayer on the 'old' CoH titles as you either need to be connected to the old servers (which are offline) or have a CD which many people don't have as they bought it digitally. In which it is still a waste of time anyway, you might as well just download the new steam version.

I haven't played online yet but I've played a few skirmishes and did the tutorials for the British and the Germans so I can try them out too. So far I've noticed the game seems to load a bit faster but otherwise it seems exactly the same.

Just don't make the mistake I did and download the old version. New Steam Version!
