COH does not start in Windows 10 - Does anyone have a working solution?
Part One: The Problem
I bought this game for me and a friend several months ago when I was still using Windows 8.1, and it worked fine. But, when I upgraded to Windows 10 it stopped working. I click on the game and steam puts up the "preparing to launch" window, then after a few moments it disappears and nothing happens. Steam says that I've just played the game, but I haven't even seen a loading screen. There are no error messages, it just doesn't start.

Part Two: What I've Done
1. I verified the integrity of the game cache (multiple times)
2. Ran the game in compatibility mode (for several different versions of windows)
3. Ran the game as administrator.
4. Checked that all my computer drivers were up to date.
5. Deleted the game and downloaded it again.
6. Contacted Sega support (Relic website takes you there), who told me to verify the game cache, run the game in compatibility mode, and:
7. "Refresh your Steam files" Followed the instructions to do this, still no change.
8. Deleted a folder in the game files (someone in the steam forums said it would help, and I don't remember what the folder's name was), it didn't change anything.
9. Played Rome: Total War, a game that is older than this, but works fine in Windows 10, which upset me more about this not working.
10. Started writing this article on the Steam support forums.

Part Three: *points* Only YOU can help me solve this problem.
Are you a wizard that has used magic (light or dark) to fix this game? Please send me the spell you used! If no one can help, I'll be forced to...well...(lowers voice to a whisper) play other RTS games that are not set in World War II. *shudders*

That sounds annoying. Here's a few other suggestions:
1. Start Steam in Admin mode (I know you said you started the game in admin mode but try starting Steam in admin mode too)
2. Turn off anti-virus and firewall and see if that makes a difference.
3. Check for Windows updates

I have Windows 10 myself and it runs fine.

See this thread. Different game but same problem.

Post 33 sounds like a promising solution. (relates to C++ DLLs.)
Post 44 is another contender. (An issue with Steam itself)

This posts suggest running the game in Windowed mode:

With these sorts of problems you just have to try everything until you find a solution that works for you.

If worse comes to worse maybe roll back to 8.1

First of all, thank you for taking the time to respond. I tried your suggestions, but the game still refuses to start. If there was an error message or something I could work from that, but as it is I'm in the dark. I did get the old version of the game to work, though. I can't do anything online with that one, but at least I can get my fill of single player while I work on the Steam version.

It could be running as a background task. Check the task manager. However, I have no idea how to get it running (I had a problem with total war shogun 2 starting as a background task in windows 8.1 and I did various things, although I've forgotten what exactly I did and then it randomly started working again.).

It doesn't seem to be running in the background (if it is, task manager doesn't know it). If I can get the old version of the game to run using the simple windows compatiblity method, it doesn't make sense why the new version doesn't work doing the same thing.

Then I don't know what your problem is, apologies. It is especially weird that the old versions work.

Thanks for the idea, anyway. Several other people seem to be having the same problem since the Windows 10 upgrade, and no one knows to fix it.

have you also tried to enter your steam folder into your antivirus exclusions? sometimes that may fix your problem.. otherwise not sure what else you can try..

could even possibly be an issue with your hardware. like something in your pc isn't seated very well and just needs a little push back down or maybe the sata cable ur using for the hd/ssd is starting to wear out.

happens sometimes but cant hurt to check everything.

(forgot to mention i have upgraded from 8.1 to 10 as well and there has not been an issue so far)

Added it to my antivirus exclusions, still no change, and there don't seem to be any problems with my hardware. I did notice something new, though. One of the .exe files had been telling me that I had a missing dll file, so i downloaded it and followed the installation instructions. Now the message has been changed to say that "the porcedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library" Any idea what that means?

you need a different version of the dll, you need to put it in the game folder where its needed.

I had the same problem with Windows 10 and.... I disabled the Windows 7 compatibility mode in steam.exe properties and is running well here

No luck on both counts I'm afraid, thanks for the suggestions though. I'm going to delete the game and download it (for the third time) to see if maybe, just maybe, it will work.

Am using Windows 10 x64, works flawlessly for me! What specific issues you facing? Your config and driver version?

Hi there! I'm wondering if you were able to fix this issue, same problem here and tried everything that I read on the discussions
Sephironi Mar 5, 2022 @ 10:56am
Hello, I had the same issue. I started task manager (ctrl + alt + delete) and double clicked the Company of Heroes in there. Then it starts in windowed mode, you can just go fullscreen after this. I only needed to do this once, after this is started fine fullscreen by launching it from Steam. I hope it helps!
