Uh I use the same strategy with the sword and it does work for me? I usually conecentrate on leveling the sword and the attack speed boots as much as possible. Pop the shield before stepping into the damage aura and just run to the banshee and whack away. She should go down without you taking any damage. Maybe you just need to level the sword more?
Oh, yeah, I did figure out that strat pretty quickly - it helps if you have a feel for how fast the banshee's aura ticks, and then attack right after a tick. The sword, oddly enough, is my favorite weapon now.
Also the monsters that drop souls, you could ad somo kind of respawning of them when you intearct with something like a grave or a bulding.
