Would be cool and that already has been questioned in the Heretic and Hexen forums. But today I was thinking about it: a nice game that could be picked by Nightdive, and it's also currently abandonware for not being released in any official store, is The Operative: No One Lives Forever and its sequel.

That doesn't mean it's abandonware. NOLF is very much a license with people controlling it.

The problem is the ownership is a mess of multiple license holders and they haven't been able to sort it out. Nightdive's CEO wants to re-release NOLF and its sequel, but hasn't been able to due to the licensing problems.
Let them fix and finish their previous "remasters".

They tried to remake Hexen, but they only found 11 out of the 16 switches required to solve the puzzle.

NOLF is a very special series to me, even Contract JACK. The situation there absolutely breaks me heart. It's literally being hosted on a website that's easily found on Google though, and has been for over a decade at this point. No C&D has been sent. Fans have done an amazing job with keeping those games alive and patched for modern systems.

Yes, I know it's all over those sites. So are a lot of things that aren't actually abandonware.

The issue is so many people having controll over the ip but none of them caring enough to actually do something with it even when nightdive and others go to them to try to untangle the mess of it all to put the games out officially again. Even when that would mean money for the license holders.

What you're missing is that they've been kept up to date.
That's more than what most "abandonware" games get.

That's just how games with longstanding communities go. I mean... we're literally on the steam board for one of those games. Hell, go look at Thief 1-3 some time.

Heretic 2 was so odd. I kinda wish I still had my CD of it. Iirc it's one of those games where it will crash on modern systems due to OpenGL extension length issues.

Heretic 2 is most certainly obtainable, as are the fixes.
I run it fine on win11

Not in any legal manner that doesn't involve hunting down a cd.

Which is what Thermal Lance is asking for. A legal method to obtain it easily.

Its perfectly legal to download it where its at
No, it isn't.

It's a licensed product under, at this point, microsoft as they now own Raven.

It is in no way "abandonware". It's just not up for sale digitally.
Kaizen Oct 10, 2024 @ 2:38pm
Suit yourself no one gives af about it but you

Meanwhile, there's literally someone in the thread asking for a legal way to obtain the game.
