No more available on Linux

[TLDR]

I was least said disappointed when I found that DOOM is still installed on my Ubuntu system but no more playable.

Id Software, do something.

PS I still managed to run the game using native dosbox but if I wanted to install DOOM II it would be quite tedious to download without Steam app.

You have a bug. The game is still available on Linux. Even the Unity port works.

Steam Store page of the game states that is is only available for Windows. Id Software disabled the game for linux

All you need is the wad files. A quick search in snap and flatpack repositories turns up plenty of ways of playing Doom that are even better than the Unity crap.

Including dosbox if you want to play vanilla.

this steam version was never "available on Linux" any more so than it is now
both the unity port and the included dosbox version are windows programs that you can play with wine or proton, even without steam running

There's a metric frickton of options for playing Doom on Linux. Else, why would there be a "It runs Doom" subreddit, where people compile versions for hardware and/or software that has no business running Doom (e.g. Fridge Android Devices, Digital Cameras, John Deere tractors, and even sportscars, all of which use OS's either directly or indirectly based on Linux)?

I assume you know about doom source ports and mods, but if you havent you are missing out

Yeah you can run Doom on anything. Imagine not being PC savvy and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about ♥♥♥♥ you could easily remedy by doing a quick google search. People never learn man. I'ts like yeah, you're on Linux but have no idea what you're doing or how to use Linux properly.

For me the simplest solution is to use luxtorpeda. The great thing about it is that once installed it works with many old games (Heretic, Hexen, Quake, Blood) etc. And it works perfectly under linux.

I play Doom on my Raspberry Pi 400 most of the time.
Why fire up the 300W high end graphics rig when it runs equally nice on a 5W machine.

Use GZDoom, with WADs from your steam version, works with mods and on Linux. You may even like Brutal Doom, Aliens Eradication and Ashes

You can get a sourceport and rename it to whatever executable Steam is trying to run when you press run. If you then activate Proton you can go directly into the sourceport from Steam.

that's not even necessary, you can run arbitrary commands in place of the actual executable by adding

path/to/executable %command%

in the launch options to any steam game, everything before %command% gets processed before the actual intended executable, in effect letting you run a program in place of the intended game
