WTF happened to DOS Doom? (Doom 1/Ultimate Doom)
EDIT: Apparently you can revert to the previous version by going to Properties > Betas in Steam, and selecting previous re-release (2019). Well this will do what it says, so you lose the updated re-release as well, but hey who cares, DOS Doom is all that matters anyway.

I don't really care about the new version. Oh sure it's nice for consoles (though really who is playing Doom with a controller on console anyway? Every PC on the planet can run Doom. Phones can run Doom.) I'm happy that console players have access to more mod wads (mapsets) and built-in multiplayer maps than ever before, with a nice launcher, and all in all a better re-release than the one from a couple years back.

However, all that stuff is irrelevant to PC players, because we have our source ports of choice that are far more powerful and customizable, though generally lacking in controller support. The new version is great for that, but I wouldn't pick it over GZDoom...or DOSBox. The latter is what I most commonly use for Doom, as it is the only way to truly get the authentic experience, or as close as you can without physically owning old hardware with actual DOS on it.

I'm rather annoyed with the decision to consolidate every classic Doom game under a single Steam game, especially since I still have my separate purchases of Final Doom, Doom II, Master Levels for Doom 2. Those will still load normally into DOSBox, with my carefully saved settings in config files.

Now all the previous windows batch files got deleted and replaced by a new one, and configs got reset. Just more of a needless pain in the ass to get this sorted out all over again, having to manually remake them from scratch. Which is ironic since I assume the point of this endeavor was to make the process more convenient to play Doom, but it's only done the reverse.

Chocolate Doom and Crispy Doom are for people who want an authentic experience, without the annoyance of tweaking the dosbox config to get things running well.

You don't need to revert anything. DOS Doom is in the "base" folder. Run "start.bat" or select "Launch DOS version" in the menu when starting Doom + Doom II from Steam(unless you manually selected to always start the new version)

dosbox-staging
think there is more settings
you may get an even better config now-
for the technically inclined it seems.

Yes, they did updated the DOSBox setup that is used to run the original DOS version of Doom, Doom II, and their original expansions; it is all in one roof in the "base" folder, uses DOSBox Staging which is much more up-to-date and actively developed unlike the original version, and it even comes with a toggle for a CRT filter.

Your files are still here. They just improved the overall package. Non-Issue.

Imagine crying about getting a better version.

Par for the course for this board.

True, although I'm guessing some of it is intentional, because that's smart to them.

Neurotic gamer complains about nonsense. Standard operating procedure for the majority of modern gamers.
