That said half are playing it without major problems, but there are other source ports which have much better (read: OpenGL 3D) graphics than Zandronum.
It may also work with DoomsDay Engine.
That said I have not tried Brutal Doom out yet.
DoomsDay Engine is the easiest.

Or Odamex...
Zandronum is just another Doomer forum. GZDoom is my port of choice as of late for offline games, but I've used Zandronum for multiplayer, and believe me, it is certainly quite safe.
Odamex is free and I think brutal doom can work on that as well. Otherwise you could use best.ever for hosting servers, but be prepared to see be adds on that server.
Zandronum is based on the Skulltag source code (it is effectively a fork, although it is more a continuation under a different name as they shamed the Skulltag name pubically) and neither of them meet the legal GPL requirements of disclosing the source code to the community (so it can be checked for hacks, cheats, backdoors, torojans, viruses, etc.) --- as such many gamers (that abide by the GPL) do not like running either Skulltag or Zandronum.
The backdoor stuff that was known was bad enough, question is "What else did the backdoor permit?" (e.g. running admin NT cmd prompt commands in the background, etc?).
No-one knows as they never disclosed the source code which both the DOOM and GPL licenses enforce them to do --- they just skirt around and do not open their source code.
Pretty pathetic if you ask me, especially as they got caught with a WORKING BACK DOOR in SKULLTAGs SOURCE CODE! (One that no virus scanner or malware tool will detect).
While the back door is indeed a valid point, it should be reminded that the staff that works on Zandronum is not fully the same staff that worked on Skulltag, as well as the original staff of SkullTag "grew up" and work on Wrack now anyway.
regardless, Odamex is the only thing I use anymore for online play for Doom. Well besides ZDaemon
Mr. Garrison? Don't you mean Mr. Mackey?
