stuck on e4m2
genuinely confused where to go here. there's tons of locked stuff but no obvious way to progress and no keys. also, did they REALLY need a baron of hell on e4m1?

Watch videos of the game on YouTube, or use idclip and iddqd if you get stuck, otherwise, get good.
Are you trying to find the secret exit or just make it past the big guy to the regular exit? Telefragging is the answer. Even before Shub Niggurath, the id lads were making it an actual mechanic.

e4m1 is easy to manage unless you're trying to get all the secrets. Just the one baron isn't too big a hassle.

i'm mostly just trying to beat the levels and grab what secrets i find, but i can't figure out how to get past the opening room in e4m2. is there something down in the area with the lava?

my only problem with the baron is just that it's so early and if you don't rush straight past him you have to fight him with a probably low ammo shotgun and a pistol
okay nvm, found the switch on the left platform, thanks anyways
yeah, lots of jumping around lava on that one.
the switch in the left chamber can be triggered from above
when you get plasma gun on balcony with torches and reveal yellow key, it's much safer to jump away and leave the barons alone, retreating via small room and teleport and shoot them through window then grab key
John Romero has made you his b*tch.

Perfect Hatred is the perfect name for that map.

Would you hate me if I were to say this one is my favourite EP4 level?

The difficulty balance is really weird for EP4. We've got two pretty challenging maps right at the start of the episode - (personally I'd say that level one was actually harder than level 2, it's almost Plutonia hard! assuming you want to get all the kills and are not interested in just rushing it), But afterward things settle down massively, the maps become more of a standard retail Doom experience and the challenge is greatly reduced.

Very odd design.

not really, i see its value now that i actually know where to go. only reason i got stuck was because the switch to progress was on the orange door so i thought i needed the key to use it

You're still doing better than I did on my very first experience of Doom, back in around 1993. I was stuck on E1M6 for so long that I got a "Time: sucks" message on the end of mission credit screen - first and only time I've ever seen it.

In my own defence I was pretty young, and Doom was the first video game ever.

yikes, i didn't know it did that. i'm a bit surprised that i never got that cause there was one level that took me FOREVER to get through because i couldn't find the right door. the one with the central ring surrounded by toxic floors that i can't remember the name of

Not at all. E4M2 is not only my favorite Ep4 level, but one of my favorites of the whole Doom series, largely because it is so challenging. It’s sort of a look forward to Romero’s later works, such as Sigil.
