e4m1 is easy to manage unless you're trying to get all the secrets. Just the one baron isn't too big a hassle.
my only problem with the baron is just that it's so early and if you don't rush straight past him you have to fight him with a probably low ammo shotgun and a pistol
the switch in the left chamber can be triggered from above
when you get plasma gun on balcony with torches and reveal yellow key, it's much safer to jump away and leave the barons alone, retreating via small room and teleport and shoot them through window then grab key
The difficulty balance is really weird for EP4. We've got two pretty challenging maps right at the start of the episode - (personally I'd say that level one was actually harder than level 2, it's almost Plutonia hard! assuming you want to get all the kills and are not interested in just rushing it), But afterward things settle down massively, the maps become more of a standard retail Doom experience and the challenge is greatly reduced.
Very odd design.
You're still doing better than I did on my very first experience of Doom, back in around 1993. I was stuck on E1M6 for so long that I got a "Time: sucks" message on the end of mission credit screen - first and only time I've ever seen it.
In my own defence I was pretty young, and Doom was the first video game ever.
Not at all. E4M2 is not only my favorite Ep4 level, but one of my favorites of the whole Doom series, largely because it is so challenging. It’s sort of a look forward to Romero’s later works, such as Sigil.
