Setting it up is pretty easy honestly.
|| You download GZDoom (or whatever you're using as a sourceport ||
|| extract GZDoom if you need to ||
|| copy the doom.wad and doom2.wad files from your Doom Steam game directory and paste those files in your GZDoom folder ||
Like mentioned it isn't necessary BUT the nice thing about these sourceports is the amount of mods you can put on them. Me personally I tend to prefer a more "classic" experience so I recommend, if you get GZDoom, turning off vertical aim, keeping on aim assist, and DEFINITELY get rid of jump and crouch (just delete the kb keys for them).
However you decide to play, whether in Unity or another sourceport, I recommend playing in this order: Doom, Doom 2, Plutonia Experiment.
After this, if you're still craving more Doom, you can download additional MegaWADs (map packs) that are just as, if not better, than the original. These are completely free mind you. Check out- Plutonia 2 (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/pl2), Sunlust, SIGIL, and Ancient Aliens. There are many more but those are some to start you off (and you can play all of the ones mentioned without vertical aim, jumping or crouching, it's vanilla style). Doomworld.com/idgames is always safe, although the website layout is archaic, so I'd go there to search for map packs.
I like TNT a bit better than Plutonia.
Also, nerve.wad has some of the most elegant levels to play Project Brutality on.
Though you might have to extract the wad from the Doom 3 BFG edition installation or download it from archive.org. I have been avoiding the unity doom installation and it's addons ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like the plague. No, I am not registering another account with you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
I actually have the original disc of this that I bought from Game Traders when they were still around. I used to have the poster too but I remember I accidentally ripped it up in a fit of rage.
Doom Retro also is nice as Crispy Doom.
