Why are doom fans hating on brutal doom?
Channeling Chris threads here but I'm completely serious (btw Chris is a great regular to have on these forums actually posts some interesting threads). But figured I'd post my own. Why do so many doom fans hate brutal doom? I think it's pure crazy adrenaline.

Project brutality is even better. The rocket launcher is insane. The sounds of the guns are frickin amazing. Kicking a zombie in the face till his head splatters? Why would anyone with any kinda interest in synthicated adrenaline hate on brutal?

Brutal Doom's creator has gotten himself embroiled in a lot of controversies over the years, including one instance where he outright encouraged someone to Canadian healthcare themselves, and another where he used photos of actual dead people for the gore in his mod which he thankfully removed.

That, and wad authors would constantly get pestered to make their wads compatible with Brutal Doom even when it wasn't feasible.

I like BD in general, and EDay (megawad made by the mod’s creator) is pretty great. Also, I think a lot of the bad stories about the game’s creator are either exaggerated or just made up. In all the recent community interactions and updates I’ve seen, he seems like a pretty decent dude. My only complaints are that I don’t like how “floaty” the player movement feels (even more so than vanilla). I also kinda hate the blown out, extremely grating audio of the player character’s voice. That’s just a bit much.

Also check out VietDoom, it’s pretty great as well!

If someone want a really good aswer on how the brutal doom hate to understading had changed, you can take a look on this magazine on their topic on brutal doom, worth a read, and you will feel less like a hate waggon for the sake of hating.

I just don't like what people are saying about him using real death that's not cool cause it's disrespectful to the dead. But at the same time if something is documentational that's one thing. Hl2 had a dead body in it but supposedly that was from a medical book. I don't think it's wrong to have real stuff in history books and documentation. But sticking that on games to me just feels lazy on top of whatever else. Why not do your own morbid art?

Brutal Doom/Project Brutality was created for gen z to experience doom and keep them interested.

I don't like to always repeat it but it's not the "definitive way to play Doom" and no, not every gameplay mods and maps need to be made with BD in mind for compatibility.

Some people even think that Project Brutality is actually better as well.

At this point, GZDoom combined with BD is its own game and no longer Doom (only merely reusing the maps and enemies from the game.

PS: I wish people could take a look at other gameplay mods and maybe even try Doom with a gore mod to keep the "vanilla-ness" of Doom with the BD gore.

Well I know of 2 pixels that use blood and animations like that and this was before the big boomer retro Indy phase. Bd and blood. Bd made dooms system a contender with build engine. Doom64 was also good.

What the creator did was take a bunch of weak pistol sounds and boring 4 frame gifs and turned them into pure adrenaline but people say action and adrenaline sucks in an octane demon shooter I guess.

For early 90s doom was pushing nothing but action tho. Hell it was the action era, Terminator 2, Jurassic park, men in black, even xfiles. Lot of action and suspense in that era.

Well, you took the worst example since the Pokémon franchise became worse these lasts years.

Also I'd argue that while the first two Gens have their charm Doom is just that timeless as a game.
Unseen Oct 4, 2024 @ 8:49am
It's timeless cause it was a pioneer imo doom is ten times better than wolf. But wolf was still pretty impressive for its time compared to everything else.

Games were pretty much 2d or isometric/top down or manipulating 1st person perspectives. But actual 3d games were innovated by ID.

Isn't it too easy to assume it's a bandwagon and that there aren't people that just legitimately don't like it?

Nope. I chose my words and thats just how most people are. I dont trash the vast majority of the human population all the time for no good reason.
Unseen Oct 4, 2024 @ 9:15am
And all I'm saying is BD was well animated and used dooms system well, no one bashes blood for doing that same thing back then...

Do you think you are better than most people?
Kaizen Oct 4, 2024 @ 9:50am
Better is a subjective term. But there is a reason 'monkey see monkey do' has been a saying since forever. Very, very few people are capable of forming their own thought process, and are influenced by others in eveything they do and feel, seeking acceptance and validation.
I don't.
But even I can get caught up at times but Im so conscious about it that I tend to catch myself if it starts to happen.
I also dont care about conforming to society or what other people think about me or anything else.
So make of that what you will
