Anyone else having trouble opening the dos version of doom?
I when I try to open it it just shuts down right away. any tips?

I think it's a problem with dosbox because when I go into the files and open dosbox it just dose the same thing. It opens up staging then closes.

I tried some other doom engine games like heretic, and it works fine on there but not on ultimate doom

Still loads fine for me. Still has novert added to the dosbox config after the last update too.

Maybe something on your PC. Everything is loading fine here.. Maybe try to delete the dosbox folder and check for file integrity to download those again

Just tried deleting dosbox and verifying the integrity but it's still happening, as for novert I'm not seeing it in the files.

Novert isn't included. You have to grab it off idgames archive and add it yourself. I mentioned it because it's something I added to the dos version before the last update and it's still functioning.

Try opening the install folder, go into the dosbox folder and run launcher.exe

See if it gives you an error message instead of properly loading into the game selection screen for the dos version

Just tried and all it's doing is loading into a black screen before closing.

Well that's odd. You trying to play on a laptop with an intel cpu? A lot of intel igpus have terrible opengl support. And dosbox staging is using opengl.

are you able to run dosbox' configtool? maybe try "run as admin" command and see if it helps

I'm playing on desktop. The strange thing is that it was working before it was updated to doom+doom II.

Could try opening doom.conf in the dosbox folder, scroll down until you find:
output=opengl
And change it to:
output=texture

The previous version was using a MUCH older version of dosbox rather than dosbox staging.

I just tried changing output and still nothing. Is there a way I could re-download previous version?
Seamus Oct 5, 2024 @ 12:00pm
Yeah. Right click on the game in steam, go to properties, then betas, then select the previous branch.

You could also just grab the wad files out of the install folder and use them with a source port like chocolate doom if you want a vanilla style experience.

Just make sure you grab the ones out of the base folder, not the rerelease folder.
Grimm Oct 5, 2024 @ 12:08pm
It's now saying it's missing some files on the last version. I've also mostly been trying to avoid source ports for a more 90s experience.

That'd be why you pick something like chocolate doom.
Chocolate Doom is a set of conservative source ports for Doom, Heretic, Hexen, and Strife, with a philosophy of preserving the look, feel, and bugs of the vanilla versions of each. Deliberately including very few new features and maintaining all of the limitations of the original DOS versions, Chocolate Doom is of use to level authors creating vanilla-compatible levels, as well as players seeking an authentically retro experience of the game as it was played in the 1990s.

As for the 2019 version, you'll likely need to uninstall, delete the contents of your ultimate doom folder, then reinstall just to be sure there's no leftover conflicting files.
