DOOM + DOOM II Desktop Icon is broken.
I have DOOM + DOOM II installed on 2 separate machines and the windows desktop icon on both installs shows up as a placeholder 'planet earth icon' instead of a 'doom icon'.
It's obviously not a big deal but it makes my desktop look ugly and annoys me.
Any fix for this?

My doom icon it's not like that, maybe delete the desktop icon and make Steam do it again with the Doom 1+2 properties options.

Why...Not...Just launch Steam games from, you know, the Steam Library. lol

Eh, you don't need to delete the game, just ask on the game property to make a shortcut again.

Yea doing that just makes the same 'placeholder (earth)' icon, oh well i can manually change it in 'properties' or live with the ugly earth icon.

That this is likely a shortcut thing and for what it does, I really resent having to explain how simple it is: Just replace the icon with the one that is on the executable, a standalone icon file, or make one ion your own (there are sites that preserve it and have downloads for custom ones too). This is less of an application issue itself, and more to do with how your shortcut is created and uses a fallback.

I've had to deal with this for many games, not just Doom. It's a nothingburger.

But again. Why not just open your Steam Library and launch games from there? LOL Desktop icons for Steam games are completely irrelevant and useless. You have to have Steam running to play the games, and if Steam is running, couple clicks to open/focus window, launch the game, boom done. Why eff with desktop shortcuts for Doom? There's literally no purpose and it just needlessly clutters the desktop.

I found that the actual icon (all steam game icons) are stored in...
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam\games
Manually point the shortcut to use icons from there.
Choosing the executable gives you a different (wrong) icon.
This is the now fixed actual Doom + Doom II icon...

* Some people like desktop icons, some don't. I never said this was some sort of BIG ISSUE. Just addressing the fact that the icon is broken for this particular game install on 2 separate machines and maybe some people would like a solution. So hence this discussion.

+1, same issue. icon was fine for a while after I+II got merged, but is now broken.
weird thing is viewing the .url file in text editor shows the correct ico file is selected. and if i re-select it manually it still wont show properly.
stubborn windows 11 icon cache or whatever. i wonder what borked it. managed to clear it with commands from elevenforums.

one thing that comes to mind is that i temporarily switched the game to the old version (available from the same place where you usually switch to betas and such), wonder if that could've broken it somehow...

What's wrong with using Properties? It only takes you a few mouse clicks to select an icon. This isn't deep.

Or...Just...Running it from the Steam Library. LMAO

You've said that already.

Not everyone is like you and they have their reasons (like not needing to launch from Steam or using Steam at all).

To select, yes, but not to see what's selected or why it's showing wrong.

You can see what is selected through that. That's the point of its existence. It's been a thing well before Steam was around.
