Original co-op is exactly how DOOM's done co-op since its original release. i.e. Infinite lives for everyone, but you go back to a pistol start when respawning.
Modern co-op limits your respawns so you can only do it when combat isn't happening, and makes it so everyone game overs and has to restart the map from a pistol start if everyone's dead at the same time, but in exchange you keep your whole inventory when respawning.
This. I can't help getting low key annoyed when I go back for something like a box of shells or a vest and it's gone.
