I don't get the Archville and Revenant
Meaning I don't get their popularity, how they even fit into doom, or why ID didn't just make more styilized catholic style demons. I've brought this up before and I don't really care if people think they look iconic, or think they are great additions to doom or whatever. If you you like them fine, but I don't see how these are any more iconic than the cyberdemon or caco. Archville I can give some slack to for looking creepy, but he still looks more like something from a ridley scott film, than doom. And the reverent... My god this things goofy, it looks like its break dancing all the time. The thing acts so weird, to many strange and awkward pixel animations stuffed into a model. I'm never gonna understand the doom inbetween. Never gonna understand doom2, master levels, evilution, or none of this... I just like doom1/64, they just started turning doom into something that didn't mean anything. Didn't fit the theme of doom1, just made doom aliens and crypt keeper, reverent looks like a skeleton wearing football padding and the way it moves it just looks so odd. I know people are not gonna agree or tell me how much they love these jokes but I don't. Think they suck whatever immersion doom initially had right out of it. A game about temporal traditional demons, then all of a sudden... Xfiles, crypt keeper?

Least everything in quake makes sense according to quakes theme, I really don't like all the gimmick levels in doom2 either. Barrels of fun? Which demon is setting up this domino trap? Is he the willy coyote of demons? What about monster condo?

Or all the elaborate scrap yards, hell on earth and the demons went after poor automobiles. This is why the only dooms I seem to like are doom1 and doom 64.

That and also,
Evil skeletons are cool,
and Evil skeletons with shoulder mounted rocket launchers are even cooler.

I think he means catholic as in "universal/unified/generalised" ...that's what the word catholic (Greeck) means aside from that other thing... as in "have all the demons have a somewhat similar style". (I'm sure a native Greeck speaker will correct this thoroughly)

Or he could be reffering to actual roman catholic iconography and it's style, much like Warhammer fantasy/40K implement those overtones into their artwork.

Ok so to the meat of the post, I sort of understand where you're coming from. Yes the revenant does look a little goofy and it moves oddly. That said.
If you look at the Imp, the former humans, the pinkies,...all doom 1 demons,...they all look goofy. Or at the very least Cartoony. They all look cartoony because of the pixelation, the way they made this artwork.

The movement, same problem, they only had X amount of frames to work with (I don't know if that's a choice or a limitation or whatever, but they did what they did). And it looks "off". You'll notice that with most sprite based animations in video games around that time, or much later even. They're not very fluid and they gotta portray a certain motion, it's gonna jump, it's gonna be blocky....having a tall skeleton walk around is gonna show that really quickly.

The only thing that's left is, you think you can do better? Have a crack at it.
Plenty of people have tried to remake the entire roster in some form with varying degrees of succes.

Doom 2 feels more like a random mash up of maps after a certain point compared to Doom where each map stuck to the theme of the episode but Barrels o' Fun is still pretty fun. The consensus I've seen is that yeah the maps in Doom 2 are a mixed bag but the new stuff added more than makes up for it. I mean who can deny the greatness of the Super Shotgun?

Besides the silly dance looking animations the Revenant is still fitting to the look of Doom. A cybernetic amalgamation of bone and gore. :DOOM_Revenant: Of course the armor is going to look bulkier on a skeleton, it probably would still look rather bulky on normal body too considering its a weapons platform for the twin rocket launchers. I don't really see the issue with the Archvile though, its still rather demonic looking. :Archvile:

Also funny you mention X-files because the Archvile has a X-Files/MiB themed skin in Doom Eternal, a real shame most of the cosmetics were joke/meme skins though.
I like the new demons in doom 2 because they totally feel like a part of the game, how can the new demons feel off is THE ENTIRE DOOM II IS OFF... The new demons are not so bad because all doom 2 is total madness, they could've introduced even human soldiers or ghosts from pac man, who cares anymore doom 2 is all a total madness, it's a very trippy fever dream... I like the new demons of doom 2 IN DOOM 2... But yeah they feels off in other contexts

Cool, don't care.

My point stands.

Oh but I think you do.

I mean why would you bother to point it out otherwise?

C'mon Chris they look cool cause doom2 is a mess? Maybe they are part of that, and I don't like the super shotgun. Way to powerful ends up replacing all gunscept plasma just for times sake. Yea I dunno saying the they look goofy isn't the same as saying they don't fit.

And the whole Catholic thing is me saying traditional horned demons. I could just say biblical. But ideas of demons are different. Even creepy dark shadows would fit more than here's crypt keeper, here's mar attacks.

Enemies make a game for me you can't just put anything in a game and cool. Not if it don't fit, that's my belief why I like q2 strogg are actually cool . Just don't like these guys they ain't even close to demon.

Yeah my comment was ironic, but you said that, they are a part of that... Super shotgun, enemies that doesn't belong to doom, earth location, levels that don't make sense, traps and weird levels like the chasm or barrels o fun, icon of sin etc.... Doom 2 is the fever land, is a big wtf... So those enemies maybe they don't belong in the doom universe, and I can agree... But they belong in doom 2, because doom 2 is madness... You know the "white Album" By the Beatles? It's like this, a big compilation of experimental stuff...but with a less exciting result... Very less exciting result, the result is madness but not always in a good way, a lot of high and lows... And those enemies and the SSG, are a part of that chaos...

It might be interesting to mention that the revenants are programmed to be same height as human enemies and imps. But their appearance is like 1.5 times bigger. Maybe there's a mod that makes them smaller?

That's funny, considering the amount of games that rely on the products of Catholic culture is incredibly vast.

Whenever you see a Gothic cathedral in a game... that's catholicism.

Anyway, to answer the OP: those mosters are popular because their design is immensely cool. Doom has the best bestiary of any shooter ever made in my opinion.

Architecture and creature design are two very different things.

It's not about the way they look, it's about their impact on gameplay. Revenants and Archviles are probably the most trouble the game can give you. Everything else in the game is predictable and simple to get around. Those 2 enemies are the infamous odd balls that keep you on your toes. They break your flow and they are often the top priority in any group of monsters.

Now you understand. You're welcome.

Why would anyone who liked them need to justify that to you?

What is the point of this?
