Mod Menu Improvement Idea: Adding Mods Locally
I think the mod menu could be fixed from a few of its issues if it just allowed people to just add mods locally. A lot of the problems come down to not being able to find certain mods either due to the limited filtering options or someone not uploading the WAD for it yet. If there was a way to just upload a mod to the main folder and have it show up in game without needing to publish the full mod on the search, that could be benefitial for people who want to play mods but not deal with the in game mod browser.

If people don't want to deal with the mod browser AT ALL. They can just use ZDL to load mods because, yes, it works on this release. At least, as far as I tested it.

You can add wads locally. You just have to make a folder for it and edit a json file to put in there.

c:\users\yournamehere\saved games\nightdive studios\doom\bnetwads

Grab a copy of the json file out of the folder for one of the wads you've already downloaded. Use that as a template. That's how I added the already downloaded copy of ancient aliens I had.

Thank you. I have heard that there was a way to do it in the files but I didn't expect it to be in the savedgames folder. Only real hope now is that they update it to make it possible to just simply add local mods in the game itself.

As a note, you don't need an alpha numeric string for the name like the in game browser uses. Like, my ancient aliens is aaliens.wad.

So, folder name: aaliens
Text in the json:
{ "id" : "aaliens", "title" : "Ancient Aliens", "version" : "1", "wad" : "aaliens.wad" }

It's pretty easy once you know what to do.

The mod browser needs a heavy revamp.

Yeah they need a proper search function. Where you can actually type out a name. They need to allow users to be able to use multiple mods at once also. Some mods only work for Doom 1 instead of functioning for both doom and doom 2 wads. I dunno why I can't use the psx soundtrack alongside the weapons/monster sounds. The mod menu is a mess and needs some serious updating.

Also need a way to report things that don't work, are duplicates or are straight up for the wrong ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game.

I found hexen in there the other day. Not a wad for hexen. Just the hexen wad.

Does the

folder name
"id"
"wad"
have to contain the same word?
Seamus Aug 13, 2024 @ 9:35pm
Not sure. Maybe? The json file for sunlust that I used as a base had the long horrible string the game uses to identify it on the mod downloader on both lines so I did it the same way for mine.

The sunlust one:
{ "id" : "a421e72b-740d-4150-8a21-0f65cfb16781", "title" : "Sunlust", "version" : "74a39bea-d46a-4f4a-a677-ac28570fa472", "wad" : "a421e72b-740d-4150-8a21-0f65cfb16781.wad" }

Ok thanks.
Just watching a video on how to get the 64 CE game to run - I think i should be able to work that out now too

As far as I'm aware in its current form you can only play Mods offline/single player... not even local multiplayer.

Wish you could load mods into an online room and people who join can download the mod directly in the room that they joined before they can ready up.

Kinda like Halo Custom Edition where you download maps as you enter a custom lobby.

Also a typing search with tags & keywords as anchoring points feature would be nice for the Mod Browser "filter" options. Instead of flipping through pages constantly.

The in game mod menu,
unless I am just using it incorrectly-

if i am on page 4 for example ,and inspect a mod and press ESC to go back ,then I am put to page 1 again -
is this normal?

Should I use a different key to navigate back?

It seems to be the case with everyone... seems like it's an oversight. They need to put a remembering condition when you back out, and same for your filter options... you have the set your filtering options every time you back out of any mod. It's unfortunate... especially with so many reuploads/fixes of mods.

Hope they address that in the very near future... same for adding a search keyword/tag feature. I want to manually get a direct result for what I'm looking for specifically if I have something in mind.

I just found I can inspect mods here-

https://mods.bethesda.net/en/doom_doomii/all

I logged in.
There is a button once I check out a mod (in blue to add to library).
Not sure if it works.
I will try it now.
At least this is a proper PC interface.

You can search key words ,eg sound ,and results are shown.
This is the best way to add the mods I think.

@Sean2111 That link's really useful thanks. I uploaded a map within the game then it just disappears, no way to see where to. Now at least I can see that it's being validated.

It would be nice to be able to upload a mod and for the owner to be able to play it immediately afterwards and check that it works ok.
