is there any normal way to play legacy of rust using gzdoom?
simply launching all id1.wad-related files does not help. Yes, the maps launch, but there are no textures for new weapons

You need to start it with doom2.wad as iwad (-iwad option) and id1.wad as pwad (-file option). Also use the laster GZDoom nightly binaries as it fixes a bug with the banshee monster not dealing splash damage.

OK. Just for info, I completed the first episode of LoR in gzdoom. Although, unfortunately, it will not help too.

gzdoom -iwad doom2.wad -file id1.wad id1-res.wad id1-weap.wad id24res.wad extras.wad
should work.

If it doesn't, the error sits somewhere else.

I have SIGIL running via GZDoom with Steam overlay, but cannot get LoR to run through Steam. Been messing with command lines to no avail.

LoR via ZDL works fine:

In the GZDoom .ini file, add the wad's location and name to the quick load section. And make sure Doom 2 is in the same folder as GZDoom.

Bingo. Latest version of Gzdoom did the trick. Didn't even need ZDL. Just grabbed id1.wad and dropped into Gzdoom, and it loaded with all the sprites. Doom2 in the same folder of course. My thanks to you both, and hopefully this helps others!
