No one is arguing against enhancements, accessibility or quality of life features. The argument is against adding free look, which breaks the original game designs, to the official release, that is all. Whataboutism helps no one.
Finally as other have stated it can't be added.
I remember the Mouse Box with the midi etc

The cross-hair I believe was added due to higher resolutions making even auto aim finicky
If you look at the sky in Vulkan/D3D you will notice that as you rotate camera, near screen edges, the sky texture stretches as you rotate camera.
This is an attempt to mimic software rendering. This is why if you tried to look up/down, everything would just infinetly stretch and be infinetly tall. You literally wouldn't be able to see the ceiling because walls would just keep on stretching up and up.
I guess this is why we don't have freelook. They designed renderers to 1:1 mimic software renderer that Doom used to have.
That's the rationale. You can't aim for accuracy of the renderer, and still add feature that Doom was never designed for. You can't have both.
You either design port to be as accurate to the original (no freelook) by making renderer behave exactly the same, just using modern API, or you design a port with freelook in mind and sacrifice accuracy and preservation.
They wanted to retain the CLASSIC Doom. Classic does not have all the nice features in a source port. I'll use Zdoom for new maps as they generally require it. Mainly due to how maps can be more complex new maps can be made and Vanilla struggles on them and they usually do need some free looking to see areas/kill stuff additionally with jumping or crouching.
Take Dark Forces. Like the original, you can't save anywhere. It's a fundamental part of the gameplay. Use The Force Engine if you want to quick save.
Will break your experience for having an OPTION?: Definetly NO.
Will affect others games or gameplays that dimitry in russia plays doom with mouse aim, jump and crouch?. Absolutly not.
My god, is not a forced feature, guys I played for years maps in classic doom and I replayed them on gzdoom and zandro with jump and aim because I want, does it matter if someone in their home cheats a single player game? MP¿? I can start hearing MP complains, just block the option and make it only aviable on SP and mods.
You can retain classic feel and have an option off by default, so only the ones who want to use it will turn it on. Having more options is always good, by that stpd mindset you guys are having night dive studios shouldnt have added the new music, accesibility options or any other visual imprvement. Let ppl do whatever they want with the game they bought
Moreover, you guys can apply the same arguments to yourselves and if you are soooo classic players I hope you only play DOS version
Im not an achievement hunter but I know there are a few out there, hard to do achievements if they are using gzdoom. I think everyone has the right to play comfortably their fav games on pc or console without needing to download extra stuff for a feature I think is not that hard to add.
But its not how the game was intended, you are going to skip entire intended segments knowing about it, or not knowing. Entire puzzle mechanics are going to be skipped.
Now I understand the fun in free look in doom and doom 64. That's why there's mods, like doom 64 or brutal doom. I'm really only playing this for the achievements and for a superior vanilla version of doom. If I wanted super modded doom I've been able to do that for years now. I played both brutal and vanilla doom 64 to completion. It doesn't bother me to play a game how it was intended, especially if the mechanics are built around not jumping.
Bionic commando for example, I thought the new sequel was kinda dumb adding a jump button. The guys a tank weighed down with metal why would he be able to jump so high?
Via sourceports is possible set freelook and is much better than weird auto aim from 3 decades. For me is strange firing on enemies what are down or up only straight. This is like cheat with auto aim. Yes I know this is doom but this is doom from 30 years ago. Now is year 2024 and this is actual Doom port with widescreen for modern systems. If you do not want it why do you not play doom in 320x240px on crt monitor only with keyboard ?
That was never an actual ability in the ID Tech1 Engine. The game engine doesn’t have the ability to create height or multiple overlapping platforms, so the line of sight for weapons is horizontal only. That’s why you can shoot monsters in the game that are on top of platforms without aiming vertically. It’s because as far as the game engine is concerned, they’re technically already at the same exact elevation as you are.
