Mouse look?
Is there a way to turn on proper mouse look? Not being able to aim up and down with the mouse just feels really awkward to me. I can't seem to find whatever setting does that, though? Am I really stuck only aiming horizontally with the mouse?

There is no freelook option available in this port.

freelook would be nice as an option.

Yup. Someone else just told me that too. Basically means I won't be playing it. Which makes me sad. I finally managed to full size the screen like the original had and now I have a giant face along with massive hud text blocking a chunk of my screen.

Oh well. Maybe they'll patch it. The music is really good, though. x_x

There's an option to invert mouse and joystick aim which definitely doesn't effect your horizontal aiming. So I guess it's just disabled by default or something? I mean, I'm fine with this as a sort of stylistic choice. But, hard coding it so there's literally no option is just bad.

Back in the 90's I swore by keyboard only. It's been 30 years of shooting stuff in video games for me, though. I just don't see me being able to play an FPS game that doesn't let me actually aim at the enemies.

Doom had no up or down and you don't need it; the game aims up or down automatically. Doom is really a 2.5 game anyways.

not playing because of old software? Please. What do you want next, 3D models?

makes no sense to have it... this is how it is meant to be played. love it or hate it, but it is what it is.

yes, there is autoaim to hit enemies on different floors. but again, the way it is.

you can be happy that the movement is not on the mouse as it used to be by default. tryy that and let us know how you like that? ;)

As the saying goes: "Don't quote the deep magics to me for I was there when they were written."

I've been playing Doom since I got my hands on a shareware copy back in, what? 1992, I think? The lack of vertical aiming and autoaim was a limitation of the time. It's been, quite literally, hard coded out of this source port.

As I believe I said before, I've been shooting baddies in FPS games for over 30 years now. My brain wants to aim at the enemies. Not the horizon below where they're standing. This one option that has no reason not being OPTIONAL basically makes the game unplayable for me and it's wild that I have to explain that at all to anyone.

This is an excellent source port and I can't really play it because of something that should be a checkbox in the options menu. I mean, I know that empathy is a lost art these days but, come on? Wouldn't that piss you off too?

Thanks, I hate it. I hated auto aim in the 90's and I hate it now. There's no reason for this to not be, at the very least, a command line argument. -_-

Some of y'all... Carmack said that Doom never had proper mouse look because correcting the vertical aspect would have been too computationally expensive. A good example is DUKE3D. Everything looked weird when you looked. HOWEVER, some of the first source ports of Doom HAD proper mouse look because cause the processors we had at the time could afford the extra math, so everyone wanted it because Doom's autoaim has ALWAYS sucked a$$.

No having mlook option in a modern source port makes my nuts hurt.

I don't know why some people get offended by this idea. "You don't need it" is not a response, just somebody who thinks Keyboard only is a flex and not plain masochism. Do not quote the old ways to me, witch, I was there mowing lawns to buy this game when it was still shareware distributed by floppy. I'm over it. Let's have a little modernization, as a treat.

Mouselook was an FPS revolution, and frankly some sections of the game are a PITA without it. Do-able, but needlessly frustrating. Calm down and let a player play.

Because the game's levels were actively designed around it not being available. The entire final boss fight of DOOM II is built around it. Same as jumping.

People seem to hate my post about it as well

try gzdoom, but do the (more) honorable thing and turn off auto aim if you have mouselook on.
